I usually buy physical media. I know this is just a sign of my age. I like to have the CD.
Anyhow, my point is to not forget about used CDs. I have bought a pile of them in recent years. When a crappy compressed song costs $1 to $2, a stretch to $5 to get a better version of a one-hit-wonder is well worth it. Many times you can get many more that 1 song for that price.
We’re very lucky here in southern Maine to have a great local record store chain called Bull Moose. They have tons of used CDs and about 8 stores.

A couple months ago I ordered Band of Joy from Robert Plant on HD tracks, it drives me crazy that I don't have the CD. I don't have much for used around here so I ebay most of them.

We have waterloo records here in Austin, Texas with tons of used gems. I lately have been all digital FLAC, but I am starting to miss cds. March I am going in to make some purchases. about 6 years ago I had over 2,000 cds stolen from my house as well as everything else with value. The cds hurt the most.

Chuck I Too Am A Physical Media kind of guy, I Have purchased some downloads and pretty quickly regretted the purchase because the physical media costs less or the same. I feel that if the only thing you are selling is a file it should be a lot less, until that happens I choose not to purchase downloads.

I mostly use my Sonos system to stream music but it is nearly all music that was ripped from CD's that I have. I like having the physical media and prefer that to downloading music. Once in a while I will also play the CD's in my ERC-2 which is a treat because it's such a nice unit. I don't think I hear any REAL difference between the streamed FLAC files and the actual CD but psychologically the CD just seems to sound better.
With downloads costing as much or more than CD's (especially used ones), I would just as soon keep buying CD's.

I think that the only unfortunate thing about the used market these days is that is that dollars to doughnuts, people rip the music before selling and don't remove their ripped copies. Which is unfortunate... I keep all my CDs because I don't want to delete the content from my computers.
Maybe a used cd sales company could give $0.50-1 from every sale directly to the artists. That's probably more than they got from the orig sale anyway.

I just recently built a physical media system into my theater sound system. A used Interga DPT1 mega changer and a mixed collection of used CDs off craigslist later and Ive got 300 music CDs at my fingertips for $250. The changer has an onscreen display that allows you to scroll through the artists and titles but I also made a printout of all the CDs in the player, one printout remains in the listening room and one at the rack for manual direct disk selection without a display. Works great but once a CD is scratched theres not much you can do to fix it short of taking it to a pro and spending more money to maybe get it fixed. None of my home remidies to fix scratches have worked, and not all of the collection plays flawless, but used is still a great savings especially when you can buy in bulk.

To me having the jewel case is part of the fun and gives you the satisfaction of the hunt. Ripping the cd into the computer just takes the fun out of it.

+1 for Bull Moose. I have been to several of their locations, including your store in Portland. They remind me of the old record stores I used to manage in the '80s/'90s. C

I'm one of those CD hunters as well. I rip all CD's to 16 bit / 44.1 kHz files and the price of CD's is not bad these days. There is a local auction I go to from time to time and there is always a box or two full of CD's up for sale. I'll check what's in there, then bid if something interests me. A box of 20 or 30 usually goes for about $1 to $3 each so it's quite the deal.
Of course, I also download music, usually at 24 bit / 96 kHz or higher when I can find what I want in the higher resolution FLAC so I'm not a total dinosaur...LOL

I rip my CD's to a vortex box and stream to my touch.I buy a lot of stuff from Second Spin on the net,and have four Rasputins in the Bay Area but their prices seem to be creeping up lately,so its been mostly Second Spin.I have everything backed up, but would rather have the physical copy just in case.

I too am a physical media guy, so much so that so far I refuse to download. I rip all my cds to flac for streaming and to put on my phone. I apparently didn't get the memo that this is the digital "cloud" age. I buy used cds when I find them either at Indy CD and Vinyl or on the internet.

I've just bought my first ever used CD from Amazon. Actually, it's coming from Goodwill Industries of South Arizona and is supposedly "refurbished to like new condition". We'll see what the condition is when I receive it, but it will be fun to listen and both hear the refurbished goodness (I hope) and the music. This is the Big Band collection that Novisnick highly recommended earlier this week.
CDs for me as well. I rip some to MP3s for use on my phone, but in the home environment, it's CDs for me.
Cheers!
Chuck

I am also a hands on physical media guy. While I only have about 400 CD's I also have downloaded my collection to my iMac and stream my music with Chordette Bluetooth thru my system. I also like to listen to my music thru my Sony 777 and Oppo using my Bryston BDA1 DAC. I enjoy shopping for cd's on Amazon and also places like Acoustic Sounds. However the best shopping experience for me comes by physically walking into a store. There are a couple of record stores left in the area that sell vinyl and also used cd's... That's the best. Also when I have the chance I venture to South st in Philadelphia where there two or three places that lend a hand to some rare fines thru the years.

I keep my original CDs because iTunes randomly deletes my music. I need to re-rip occasionally...

I keep my original CDs because iTunes randomly deletes my music. I need to re-rip occasionally... And that's another reason I don't use ByeTunes!
