KEITH? EMO should publish a 'roadmap' extending.....with diminishing certainty......as far as 18 months into the future......
I followed that for my camera when Nikon went to the Mirrorless glass.....which is substantially different in lens mount
than the 'Fx' lenses. I've got some old 'tab' lenses which will work with my mirrorless on the FTZ mount.....
I kept my eyes on a particular lens and was ready when it became available....

A “Green Room aside” here - I saw the doctor this week for my best routine six-month checkup ever: I’ve lost more than 20 pounds & dropped two waist sizes. My total cholesterol is down with good cholesterol up and bad cholesterol way down Triglycerides are way down A1C is now below seven All other metrics are within range Doctor told me to discontinue two of my medications and to keep up whatever I’m doing My goals are to drop an additional 20 pounds, to get my blood uric acid down to 5.0 mg/dL, and to maintain my blood sugar at 100 or less via diet. There’s no motivator like pain to promote change; I’ve just had all I want of gout attacks! Boomzilla Congratulations! I'm now at goal after dropping 46# and significantly increasing my exercise routine (I just did 5.75 miles on the treadmill today!). My numbers are also improved. Gout is nothing to mess with...I've had to manage my uric acid for ~20 years. A big change was noticed today...I was getting into a dresser drawer and noticed my wedding ring that hasn't fit in years. I slipped it on, and it fits again! I was going to have it resized, but I always said I should resize myself - not the ring. Job accomplished. Mark

With ALL due respect? While the treadmill is a terrific RAINY DAY option, little beats actual fresh air and a variety of terrain.
From my house? I can walk 'around the block' and not leave the development. I don't know how far, but depending on exact route? Steeper / shorter against less steep with a longer runup to the top......and I can add side streets for more distance. Once even found an old man.....very feeble....lying in his front yard and got someone to call the paramedics. Broken hip, from what I hear and nobody ever knew it was me and the wife who found him.
If I cross the street to the park? (no pavement) I can do a variety of walks including the 'fire road' which is ALL up / down and steep in some places. Not a lot of elevation at once, but it really adds up AND is what I call intervals. Stress up, than cool down....
I can walk around the small lake which is about 3/4 of a mile per lap. WAtch out for the flipping GEESE who can get aggressive...... If I go another way, I can get lots of up / down......Great small park. I can even ride much of it on my BIKE, another way to stretch the muscles a slightly different way......
And If I want to stick to the sidewalk? I can go yet ANOTHER way and go up Mesa which is 2 miles constant (nearly) uphill. I can branch from there or go straight home......I can make it in about 48 minutes to the top.
In short? I'd say walk the streets. If you are the least bit weird about that (I've been nearly run over by A-Holes on electric bikes)
I've even hiked in the dark wearing a headlamp. on LOW. The park is SUPPOSED to be closed at dark but I'm ai scofflaw and walk even over there after dark. Stay in the MIDDLE of trails, carry a stick and watch out for SNAKES. We are supposed to have Rattlers....
46lb is a lot, depending on goal, start weight and RATE of loss.....My brother had Gout and I can attest to how awful it can be. But something else Far Worse eventually claimed him, for which there was no defense..... do what I do and bring a 'walking stick' doubling as a defensive piece.

Very funny, boom, but I get it. I lived in Florida for years from Tampa south to Miami. A high point in the state is Mt. Dora.....at 184 ft while the highest point is much higher and in the Panhandle......and is actually closer to Dothan alabama than Tallahassee.
If you get in some travel? Spend a couple days maybe in Denver.....the 'Mile High City' and if that works, you can wander over to Flagstaff at nearly 7000ft. I've been WALKING to the top of Mt. San Gorgonio the highest point in Southern California at 11,502 ft. The VIEW is stupendous and I once led a group up to the 10,000 ft Ridge on the 4th of July. You could see as far as Disneyland (I later figured out using compass and map) and it looked like they were being Nuked.
Easy for me to get to? Big Bear Lake at about 6800ft with lot of higher hiking.....But I don't like it there.
Check out your LUNGS as the air gets thinner.

I’ll be in Denver this August, speaking at a safety conference & doing a book signing. Been there before - nice place…
I need to pick the brains a’youse guys. I want to add a NAS to my system. Two bays should be sufficient. I already have a couple of 4-TB drives laying around to populate it. I’ll need to access it from my Mac mini and from a Roon Nucleus via Ethernet.
Any suggestions as to an inexpensive make/model? I’m looking at a Synology DS220j?
Thanks - Glenn

Any suggestions as to an inexpensive make/model? I’m looking at a Synology DS220j? Thanks - Glenn I'm very satisfied with Synology. I bought a five bay box 7 years ago and added a five bay extension. Been running with 8 drives, Synology Hybrid RAID 2 all this time 24/7. I also have another four bay box RAID 0 for a full backup that runs weekly. The main box failed in January and I replaced it and the extension with new models. The process was seamless to transfer the 8 drives to the new boxes with no data loss and no need to rebuild from backup. As I said the NAS runs 24/7 with nearly 30TB of data including all our photo files and 2TB of music. I don't use the remote access feature but I understand it works really well. Even though the main box failed after 7 years continuous use, I'd still say I'm satisfied with reliability. And the performance of the new box is better. Oh and ... all Western Digital Red drives ... no failures. I started with 6TB drives and I'm gradually adding larger drives and will soon replace some of the older 6TB.

I do outdoors walks, too...both on our local roads and on trails in local parks (we have a lot of nice wooded parks around). I don't live in a development, so it's country roads along creeks and past farms. I do the treadmill to keep a specific routine designed to really push me. I start at 3.2 mph, then built up to over 4 mph for over 15 minutes, closing out at 4.5 mph the last 3 minutes. Then, I follow that with weights (Precor machines, not free weights). The treadmill is my cardio and warmup for weights. I do that 3 days a week, as well as 3 days a week of water aerobics. I started at 246 in August 2023 with a goal to get to 200. Early on, I lost weight quickly (~0.5#/day) as I shed the easy pounds, then I settled in at an average of 0.2#/day - with the occasional slight detour due to travel and holidays. But, I learned how to quickly return from any detours. My strength, endurance, and energy are much improved. I don't feel like a 61 year old any more. Mark

Excellent work and routine. Weight loss pattern excellent and not TOO quick which I understand has its own problems.
MY problem is to keep the wife from OVER feeding me. She seems anxious to keep 'piling it on'.
Diet, which it ALSO sounds like you have a firm grip on, than becomes KEY......
Get some blood work and even include vitimin 'D' and you're golden.....
Congrats......

Tonight is wild alaskan-caught coho salmon and pan-seared green beans - with major portion-control. I get blood work every 6 months due to some BP meds I've been on (runs in the family, independent of weight), and I can't wait for April Showers to end! I have a lot of work to do outside! Mark

I've ordered a Synology DS220j RAID box that supports two physical drives. I have (currently) about 5TB of music data (I've recently cleaned house). The RAID will be Network Attached Storage (NAS) connected to my system via Ethernet.
To fill the two bays, I have on hand three 4TB drives and one 6TB drive. As I understand it, drive sizes cannot be mixed?
As I see it, there are two choices:
1. I can use two 4TB drives in RAID-0 configuration (no redundancy, 8-TB total capacity). If I do this, the data size will exceed 4TB and then I'll have to do periodic manual backups to my 6-TB drive or else use online backup via Backblaze.
2. I could, alternately, buy a second 6-TB drive for a RAID-1 configuration with full data redundancy and a total of 6-TB total available capacity. Since the drives are hot-swappable, either drive that failed could be replaced on the run without data loss.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of these two choices?
Also, the Synology offers the option of running the RAID box continuously, or of shutting off the drives when not in use. The NAS, being used for music listening only, won't actually need to run continuously, but might last longer if left running even when not in use? My only current 6-TB drive, despite having low hours, is sometimes reluctant to initialize within the allocated time limit of the connected computer, and I have to "bump start" it so the computer will recognize it. Once recognized, it works fine.
Also, there seem to be a dizzying array of bare drive choices if I need to buy another. Options I see (and maybe understand) include "internal / external / enterprise / 5400-RPM / 7200-RPM / 2.5" / 3.5" / ssd / hdd." Which are appropriate for the RAID? Are there any other drive-buying pitfalls to be avoided? I think the Synology uses SATA-3 interface and their own proprietary formatting?
Thanks - Glenn

Are there any other drive-buying pitfalls to be avoided? I think the Synology uses SATA-3 interface and their own proprietary formatting? Thanks - Glenn I have a mix of 6 and 12 TB drives in my system. I started with several 6TB drives but then added a 12. I think the rule is when you add or swap, you can go bigger but not smaller. My original 6TB drives were WD Red 5400RPM because that was what was available 7 years ago. I think you can easily get 7200RPM now and much larger, of course. The Synology RAID calculator is very handy for looking at options of redundancy and capacity. I decided on SHR-2 for the main box (2 disc redundancy) with an additional box RAID 0 for maximum capacity as a full backup. If you do SHR-1 or RAID 1 so you can hot swap a disk, yes with only two they have to be the same size. Since I have several bays I have options to swap in larger drives as time goes on. Yes, when not in use it can sleep ... only takes a couple seconds to wake up. The newest boxes wake up much faster than the old one. The WD Red drives have been so reliable ... I'm sticking with those. 7 years without a failure. But relying only on RAID 1 in the same box is a little risky if the box should fail in a way that it corrupts both drives. I think if you have a reliable external backup (physical or cloud, at least daily) then with just two drives RAID 0 would be fine. I know it's tempting to just use smaller drives that you have, but if you can swing it I would recommend a couple slightly larger WD Red 7200RPM drives. p.s. If you use RAID 0 , if one drive fails you lose all the data. If you need more capacity you have to replace them both and rebuild from backup. Backup drives have to be in periodic use to be sure they are functioning. Synology's backup app can do data verification. So you always know the data is good and hopefully you don't have a primary and backup drive fail at the same time. p.p.s. My main box was asleep from overnight ... network lights off. I double-clicked a jpeg and it took about 30 seconds to wake up from a dead sleep, connect to the network, spin up the drives, and open the JPEG. In my use it generally doesn't go completely to sleep during the day.

Awesome info, as always, marcl. At the moment, I'm trying to minimize costs, and using existing drives seems the way to go for me. I'm reluctant to put my 6TB drive into a RAID. I keep that drive hooked up to my Mac mini, and when I just turn the drive on, it never shows up as mounted. To persuade it to mount, I have to start the drive, then rapidly cycle the power switch off/on again while the drive is still rotating. Once I do this, the drive initializes correctly and shows up on my desktop. The issue isn't the time limit that the computer waits for the drive to initialize, but the time the drive itself takes to spin up and THEN initialize. I fear that if I use that 6TB drive in the Synology RAID, it will throw error messages and never mount. But I could be wrong, so it may be worth trying... Anymore, I seldom add new music to my library, so I think that, provided that I kept a backup on the 6TB drive, using two of the 4TB drives in RAID-0 could work for me. If I wanted both belt and suspenders (not a bad idea since the standalone 6TB drive will still be reluctant to mount), I could use BOTH a local backup (on the questionable 6TB drive) AND a cloud backup via Backblaze. If I wanted to spend $$$, I could just buy two new 8 or 10TB drives and be done with it. Ultimately, I may have to go that route. I definitely WILL check out the "Synology RAID calculator," thanks for making me aware of it! Since my RAID will ONLY be used as a music library, I don't think that spending extra for 7,200 RPM drives or exceptionally high transfer rates would justify the extra cost? However, since I'm to be using two and only two drives in the RAID, buying "enterprise" drives might be worth the extra cost to (hopefully) increase reliability? Thanks again - Glenn Postscriptum - After a lot of looking around, I think that I'll probably consider the RSL Speedwoofer 12s as my first subwoofer choice. It can't go as loud as many cheaper 15" subs, but I don't play loudly anyway. The RSL sub has the features I most want: linear frequency response / sub-20Hz -3dB point / low distortion / built in frequency correction curves / solid cabinet. Cheers!

I would certainly use Backblaze, except that to upload and keep synced nearly 30TB of data would take months. You're right, I think 5400 vs 7200 for music doesn't matter. For large photo files it matters for me, and that's why I have a 4TB solid state drive in my PC that I use when working on a new photo shoot with thousands of 70MB files. Then when it's done I transfer to the NAS and that works for ad hoc access.

I'm not a fan of RAID 0 OR 1. What's it take to go RAID 5? 3 drives minimum, but 5 would be more ike it......and if a drive fails? Install a new drive and it will reconstruct and you're good to go....I think it will do this 'on the fly' for minimal interruption. Total capacity is number of discs MINUS 1.......So? 5 drives of 4tb each is 16tb net......which SHOULD be enough and delete offline storage. I'm a fan of OWC who will sell such an enclosure and PS www.owc.com/solutions/thunderbay-4-thunderbolt-3Link to 4 drive version. Using 6tb or 8tb drives would net a HUGE capacity and safety....

I can't argue with your logic, leonski, but my Synology box is arriving on Monday. Two drives might not be optimal, but for my needs, it's sufficient - particularly if I supplement the RAID with online backup.

Movie Notes: it's been over a week.....
Today? 'The All Star Cast'. Within the last few years.....NO entries of any worth in this category.
But going back a few years?
CASINO. Deniro. Pesci. Stone. Rickles. Woods King. EVERYWHERE you look is a familiar face and all parts, even the smaller / lesser roles were played by a wonderful group and to the hilt. No hamming or overacting. Even Steve Allen had about 30 seconds!
But you have to go back a little further to 'It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World'..... Going thru just the list on IMDB, I recognize more than 20 names. Starts with Spencer Tracey. and continues with Jim Backus. Joe E. Brown. The Three Stooges! Jonathan Winters. And so many more my brain cell fails. EVERY character in this film is memorable, well done and played to a 'tee'....Evil Mother Ethyl Merman? Her son (future biggie) Dick Shawn.....?
I'd have to go to IMDB and just to a copy / paste. Don't forget that Jonathan Winters was institutionalized several times....maybe once as a result of this movie and STILL went on to fame and fortune AND was a huge influence on Robin Williams....
Parts filmed here in San Diego. I keep looking for the Big 'W'.......
Point is? It does not appear possible to make a movie like either of the above today. Some EGO would blow the whole thing up demanding some gigantic salary.
