I use a squeezebox touch and 3. Check out the Marantz Na7004 and Pioneer Elite n-50. Ironically I'll be testing out a Daphile PC probably after this weekend. Will load it over the weekend on a motherboard with an optical output. I'll be interested to hear what you think since you have other gear to compare it to. I have an Asus CM601-i motherboard lying around. I might just have to build another Daphile unit. I'm not seeing too much that allows you to connect directly to a shared drive - at least not in my price range. Most seem to require UNPNP/DLNA ... which is okay, but not really what I was going for.

I have been an advocate for Emotiva to come up with a streamer. I feel that the commercial solutions are ridiculous. Check out the crazy Naim or Linn offerings. Then there is lumin which looks great! but is $7,200.
I have a friend with a dedicated PC with a SOTM USB card in it and he swears that it sounds almost as good as his Linn Turntable into his DAC.
I'll try to do some listening, I don't have golden ears like some, but I generally can tell which one I like better. I'll switch my SBT to optical for the test (I usually run Coax Digital Into the DaC).
Most of the Denon/Cambridge/ Marantz Audio players can take a USB drive and reads files from them.
The one that looks great from a feature standpoint is the bryston offering. It is designed to have drives plugged into it, but they are $2k and 3k.
Over on the Naim forum there are people who use the Squeezebox Touch to feed their Naim Gear, meaning the nDAC on big buck systems. Squeezebox is tough to beat as far as the front display. I use the supplied remote all the time. Rarely do I use an app to select music.

iMac streaming to 2 gen 1 Apple TV's and an Airport Express, controlled via the 'remote' app on an iPad. Works pretty well.

SimAudio Moon MiND 180. Not cheap but it handles my hi-res files like a champ with no problem. It does nothing but stream.
No internal DAC, no unnecessary front screen or controls, no mini pre-amp or any other such things. Plug and play, streams off of my UPnP enabled server and is controlled via iPad.
Great connectivity options. I use an Ethernet in from my network, AES/EBU out to the DAC.

I just found out that on LMS 7.9 (beta available) there is now native support of DFF and DSF files. That's not going away any time soon!

Im using a Synology DS1831+ NAS and can stream to my OPPO or SqueezeBox3 or Apple TV and Airport Express...but I also can plug the DC-1 into the NAS via USB and stream direct from that or I hope also my XMC-1 when it comes. All controlled from a web page on my PC/MACs and iOS apps on my iPh and iPads...I can even stream from the NAS to my PC/MAC/iOS devices and even to locations outside over the internet. This is for audio AND video.

I'm using a laptop with Toshiba DynaDock which allows me to connect multiple USB hard discs. I'm using Mezzmo software to access and control this library. This is a very effective and inexpensive setup...

Using Squeezebox receivers to stream form my laptop. 4-TB USB drive connected to my laptop running LMS. 3 other USB drives are exact backups. I have 1 Duet remote but that's in storage. I use the apps on my tablet and smartphone for control.
1 SB receiver feeds the DC-1 in my office via optical. DC-1 drives the Airmotiv4s.
1 SB receiver feeds the XDA-2 in my family room.
I plan to buy 1 more SB receiver to feed the XMC-1 in my theater. Either that or a small the laptop in the theater and shift everything onto it.

Jriver an HTPC over 16TB with Asrock Z87 Extreme 4 via HDMi to a umc200, with the crackles and snaps, static, I might of well purchase a TT, at least figuring what's going on would be less difficult to find out.
Horrid!
I'm wondering if I use another type of connection if it will help!

Maybe I'll tag on a question here. Has anyone seen a device that will create an AirPlay stream? The idea would be to take the Zone output from a processor (like the XMC-1 but any fixed output would do), send it to this device and then choose various Airports and AppleTVs in the home. It wouldn't need a screen as you'd use an iDevice to configure and control it. I normally stream to these devices directly from my Mac mini (to also answer the OP), but it would be much more flexible to take any source the processor was playing and send it to your Airplay devices.
Now that I think about it maybe the Mac mini could take an analog or digital input (via the mic in) and then use the standard Airplay output function to redirect it? This might work, but a more simple device would be nice - essentially an Airport Express in reverse. Has anyone seen anything like this?

Thanks I'll try optical first, I guess the USB in on the umc-200 would accommodate audio, not just for updated? Any Usb cable would do? I have some around here, but don't know if they'll work out of specs and such. Djoel

Well I did something in the setting which I can I can't find again, or replicate ,( I saw the words Wasapi?) so certainly it's user error, but what ever I did it sounds great now, no static, or pops! Music if full, and lively. Can someone guide me to a thread more inclined to all things Jriver, for dummies novice right here! Dan
