The gentleman i bought the xpa-3 gen1 from mentioned that there is some controversy regarding using 12v triggers with the xpa-3... I cannot find any mention of what he is referring to. So i am just going to ask, does it harm it or is it perfectly safe to use?
The receiver i'm using to pre-out to the xpa-3 is the onkyo tx-nr818 if that makes any difference.

Never heard of any trouble with that. I've been using triggers with my XPA-2 and XPA-5 for years now. However, some of the Onkyos will only trigger a zone 2 component. I had an 807 and that was the case.

I have an XPA-5 connected to an Onkyo 818. The trigger issue is related to the Onkyo unit and the way the trigger works.
There are a couple of work arounds. You can use an Emotiva ET-3 trigger module or a smart power strip like the Smart Strip LCG3 available on Amazon.
Its a pain that the workaround is required but its simple to do.
There is info on this forum (but search is not great) and in the Onkyo TX-NR818 discussion at AVSforum.com

Thank you for the reassurance, would hate for anything bad to happen to this amp as i love it quite dearly (after i figured out why i was getting white noise in my klipschs of course). I'll set everything up (in the process of moving to the new house) and figure it out from there!

Also if i don't go the 12v trigger route does it shorten the lifespan of the amp if i just leave it on all the time regardless of if it is in use?

Lots of amp owners leave them on 24/7. Emotiva amps are fine being left on.

If you have a Harmony remote you may be able to get it to work by creating another 818 device which will actually be for the zone 2 power. Add that device to the activity and it should power on thereby activating the trigger. I did something like that and it worked fine. I just don't remember all the details.

Its been a couple of years since I set mine up but Geebo is correct - its a zone 2 trigger. Easiest to program a Harmony remote to power on zone 2.
