huy guys, HERE IS MY STORY.... for years a very good friend and i were involved in the pursuit of audio and speaker building together. his name is chip. six years ago his wife and he split and with five boys the child support was considerable. along with that he has multiple sclerosis in a reletively advanced stage so health care costs eat up discretionary income. he put his system in storage since his living situation was constantly in flux and the only listening available was in his car. recently his situation improved to the point that he could set up his system in his garage and happily we got it up and running for a day and a half and then his carver amp gave up the ghost. (it is 22 years old). well... that happened last night and needless to say he is somewhat devastated since he has no funds to replace the amp but is resigned to the situation. i am including a couple pictures so y'all can see what the system looks like. the rest of the system includes a rotel preamp, denon cd player and tuner along with a pair of diy speakers full of madisound speaker parts. HERE IS MY PROPOSAL..... i would love to get chip (michael is his real name) a upa-200 to replace the fried carver but the total cost is out of my budget. i am wondering if any of you compassionate audiophiles out there might be willing to donate a dollar, 2, 5 or 10 to the cause. and i would pick up the balance of what it costs. btw.... it is on clearance and with my eclub discount it is about $270. if anyone is interested in helping, i could have people send me paypal or a check or something like that. you could pm me and indicate what you might want to do. i can then give you my paypal address or home address. FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW ME... this is not a scam and you could pm chuckienut, roadrunner or geebo and they will attest to my integrity and assure you that the funds would actually end up going where i said it will. also, if you think this is a little unseemly, you can tell me that too. thanks for reading....... tchaik…..... JUST WANTED TO THANK ALL OF YOU WHO WERE INTERESTED IN HELPING. THE AMP ARRIVED AND IT IS NOW INSTALLED AND WORKING BEAUTIFULLY……. GO THE THE END OF THE THREAD FOR PICTURES

tchaik, I have a practically unused NAD C270 power amplifier that has just been sitting in it's original box since I bought my first Emotiva amplifier. I'd be glad to donate it as long as you can come up with the shipping, not sure where your friend located but I'm sure it wouldn't be anymore than $20-$25. Just let me know and I can pull the NAD out of storage where it's been for around 8 or 9 years.

I just sent Tchaik a PM about the story behind this amp. I had bought the NAD new from an authorized NAD dealer Saturday Audio in Chicago back in 2000/2001 before a divorce. I had planned on using it for surround channels, but a divorce happened and it got put in storage for about 6 years. After that, Dan & Cathy Laufman moved to Franklin, and Emotiva happened in my life, so home theater plans changed in the name of XPA/XPR power amplifiers, so another 7 or 8 years of storage in my current home. In that time, the NAD might have been used 10 hours total, so the way I look at this is Chip was meant to have this amp to begin with and he'll be getting a hardly broken in, practically new in the box from 2000. I'll be sending it out tomorrow so it should reach it's destination no later than Thursday and Chip can be rocking out by the weekend! I also believe music should be shared, so just my way of paying it forward.

Wow, LCS, that was very kind of you!! And that NAD amp is a very nice unit, Chip will be in 7th Heaven, I'm sure!
I have a similar story to share. Many moons ago, I met a guy with MS at a Grateful Dead show. His name was Vince. Vince was a music fanatic and his music was the only thing that gave him a respite from the demon that is MS. I would visit Vince at his apt. in Washington, DC and bring him shows that I had downloaded while at my programming job at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). FERC had a VERY fat pipe (T3 line) and I could download shows from the Internet Archive (archive.org - check it out!) at a blistering pace.
One day I showed up with an armload of CDs for Vince, yet he was quite despondent. It seems that his Sony CD player had gone belly-up. I happened to have a Yamaha multi-disc player gathering dust in my audio equipment stash so I grabbed it and got Vince back up and running the next day. The look on his face when I showed up with that player was *priceless*! It made me feel so good!
So, kudos to you, LCS - I hope you feel half as good as I did - I'll never forget it....

Man, I logged in 2 hours too late. I really wanted to jump in on this. Tchaik, this is great. I'm thrilled that you and LC were able to work it out thanks to a very generous donation from LC! Huge respect for the both of you. I'd love to hear the follow-up story once Michael finds out about the surprise. It's stuff like this that brightens my day.

Just one request, once Tchaik and Chip get the amplifier hooked up and running. A picture of Chip listening to whatever his favorite music is and the name of the group/song he's rocking out to!

Lc, I'm about worn out thanking you ,,,,,well ,,,,,for being you!!! Once again this family of forum members that I call friend reinforces my belief in my good taste of friends. This is the exact reason I call even strangers to this forum " friend" because it won't be long before they get the fact that we are all brothers and sisters here!!! The trust, love and comradery are the qualities I find on this forum is heart warming to say the least.
OK, I'm not a writer, y'all know that from my reviews,,,,,,,but I think y'all love me just the same,,,,,ok ,,,like me,,,,,,,,ok,,,,ok,,,,,tolerate me,,,,,,,he,,,,he,,,,,, But like it or not we all care and love each other. And that is the spirit that lives here. God bless you all and Big Dan etal, for providing the vehicle for our meeting one another.
Thank you all for being here in one another's lives. God bless those in need of prayer and those that do the praying, bless those in need and those who can give and do I'll now end this before we start singing in the choir.
Well,,,,,,,,,it is Sunday for a lot of us. Amen
Nick
