That is a very good question and one that opens to door to another. I think everyone would agree that Class A and A/B amps are great, but they weigh a ton. How many of you would like a really nice light weight Class D? Thoughts and or comments? Lonnie

I have three class D amps now, but when I move from 9.1 up to 11.1 or more, I'd definitely consider an Emotiva brand - as long as it's at least 200wpc.

Lonnie Hi Lonnie, I haven't found a Class D amp that i like the sound of, even a Class AB amp (XPA-100) sounds better then the Class D amps that I have tried for my sub woofer. If you can get a Class D amp that sounds as good as an Emotiva Class AB amp then I reckon you are onto a winner. BTW, weight to me is irrelevant, power amps stay in the same place until they don't work for me any more. Cheers Gary

no thanks Lonnie. I like what y'all have right now Unless you can compete with the hypex crowd.

The new TPA3116 chips sound good. I have a few of them. With a good solid PS they might sound great.

no thanks Lonnie. I like what y'all have right now Unless you can compete with the hypex crowd. I'm with Garbulky on this one. I love my current Emo amps, and have no need to swap them out, simply for the sake of getting new gear. However, the N-Core amps caused such a "ruckus" that I was VERY tempted to sell my X series amps and build a pair. Life and finances got in the way, so it never happened. If Emo were to jump into small, lightweight, class D amps that could toss the N-Core off the throne in regards to SQ, power & cost...well then I would probably spend more than just a little bit of time trying to figure out how to upgrade.

With my PA 7-350 I think I'm all set for the foreseeable future. Yes, it's a beast but it's settled into the cabinet and the neighbors have got to know it quite well by now. I will be watching this space with interest however.

lonnieI would LOVE to have Emotiva have a line of high end Class D's. I own a pair of Hypex nCore monoblocks I built, and I really love their sound (so much that I got rid of my XPA-2 after I got them). I have seriously toyed with building a 5-channel amp with Hypex parts, but I have held off as my XPA-5 is doing quite well for duty on center and 4 surrounds. Part of my interest in Class D for these channels is lighter weight & lower power usage (plus, I know from my Hypex experience that Class D can deliver the needed punch AND sound quality). But, just today, I was thinking "what if I get into Atmos". I would need 4 more amp channels, and this would need with built into the ceiling speakers or be a stand alone unit (or two). If I added channels, I don't really want a giant behemoth sitting there to provide what I need. Some amp modules that are small, light, pack a punch, and are cost efficient would be ideal. Emotiva value...extra ideal. One thing I REALLY love about my ncores is that they are so light I can (and do) wall-mount them. This frees up space in my rack and also looks pretty cool (unique...). So, if you make some small boxes, consider having a wall-mount bracket or wall-mounting built into the cases in some way. Here is a link to the thread that includes pix of mine wall mounted (see post from 3:31 PM to see the photo)...still loving the approach. emotivalounge.proboards.com/thread/25646/marks-hypex-nc400-build?page=9If I built a multichannel version, I was toying with a wall-mounted array with 5 channels that would hang neatly behind my rack. If I had my wish for what I would want w/Atmos would be an array with 4 channels to power the ceiling speakers that would wall mount behind my rack (or put inside my ceiling, which is dropped)...or, for me, I could manage having active speakers in the ceiling w/small built-in Class D's, and I would ideally run XLR's in the wall/ceiling up to them from the pre-outs of my RMC-1. (By the way, when might we expect that... ) Mark

^Hmm... a multichannel (7ch) version of a Class-D amp, fan-less and a small form-factor would certainly interest me. Ditto for a 2-channel version.

An Emotiva made class D monoblock would probably push me over into a DIY subwoofer world project.

With all the Atmos talk and the potential need for relatively large numbers of channels, Class D makes sense to me. In another thread I mentioned the thought of an expandable Class D amp (start with 5, expand to 7, 9, 11). Maybe a multichannel companion for a 9 or 11 channel RMC-1?

Emotiva makes some nice A/B amps. I have little interest in a class D amp, except maybe for subwoofer builds.

Can Emotiva make a class D that sounds like an A/B amp? Can they go further and make it significantly less expensive and significantly smaller in form than a class A/B? What are the tradeoffs?

I would definitely be interested, as I am currently looking hard at the Red Dragon M500MkII and Aluminati Sound X2 amps.

I would be very interested.
Weight and power draw as well as better handling of complex loads are imho the main advantages. SQ-wise there are some digital Class D amps out there now which sound very good.
NCore was mentioned already but Hifiakademie and Pascal modules (Denmark) are also very good. Crown XLS is also a well known and good sounding switching amp...
I own a Hifiakademie Poweramp which SQ-wise is on par with my 7-350.
I would like Emotiva to bring out a line of Class D amps.

I would jump all over high power (200-500+ W/ch) class D half width monoblocks (or 1U size) so one could build a stereo or as many channels system one would like. Just make sure it has a beefy linear power supply. Switching power supplies are a no-no.
So when do I get to place my order?
