I was waiting on a pair of TRS mono to rca adapaters to arrive, but I just picked up these trs stereo to rca adapters at RS because my speakers came earlier than expected.
I hooked up the JBL LSR305 monitors and the sound is very low. I maxed out all volume sliders on PC and knobs on back of monitors are turned to max. All settings on back of speaker are correct, I checked twice at least. No settings were changed in PC.

TRS stereo male jack likely has both Left and Right polarities. This could be your problem: Best to get mono adapters. Or you can hack it. (Ignore references to HP-4 and Avantone but the principle is the same):

Well, I just attempted to cover the left (return) ring with a sliver of electrical tape but as I figured, it wouldn't insert into the jack.

Well thanks for the help Hemster. The speakers do sound good, with what little volume I can get out of them. Hopefully after I get the mono adapters, all will be well.

You can try inserting or removing the plug real slow and see if you get louder signal for an instant. Or maybe not, you might end up with a loud 60Hz buzz or loud pop.

The mono plugs solved the issue. I returned the stereo pair to RS.
These JBL's are excellent!
