So I have a very nice two channel system I am thinking about expanding to 5 channel. I am driving it with a pair of XPA-1L. I am using Dynaudio speakers by the way. So I have thought about finding another XPA-1L for the center and either two more XPA-1L for the rear or an XPA-2. Or Just getting one XPR-5 for the whole system. Thoughts??
Thanks for any input you might have! Scott

Because its a 3 channel amp, 200 watts X 3, I use one for my centre and rears and its great.

I want all three of my front channels to have the same amplification though.

I want all three of my front channels to have the same amplification though. you will be good with an xpa 3 on the center .. but if you have lots of cash... get another xpa 1l and and xpa 2

I want all three of my front channels to have the same amplification though. Why's that? assuming your centre speaker won't be the same as you left and right speakers I highly doubt you will notice any difference between a XPA-3 driving your centre and a XPA-1L driving your centre.

The center will be the same as the left and right. I believe in matched drivers on the front soundstage....

When I said the same I mean't the exact same speaker, as in the exact same floor standing speaker you have for your mains. Almost every dedicated centre speaker will always sound a bit different to their floor standing counterparts even if they share the same drivers because they are in a smaller enclosure.

I have owned many Emotiva amps in the past 4 years but none of the XPR series, the 1L's are great amps but the difference for me in my setup from all the others was minor if even, I went from an XPA-5 gen2 to the 1L's and could by no means tell a difference, could be me, my setup or my room but my room is acoustically treated and helps everything sound their best. My last passive setup was 3 XPA-1L's powering my front three and 2 channels from an LPA-1 powering the rears and it blended just fine IMO. I would say if matching the front three is a priority grab an XPA-1L for the center and even a UPA-200 for the rears. In the end it comes down to what you want hehehe and how much moolah you are wanting to spend Chad Edit, if I was to do passive speakers again I would grab an XPA-5 and be done with it

I'm a two channel guy primarily though I do a lot of movie watching. Music is where I get my enjoyment. If it was me, the ability to go fully balanced and have class A mode is something the XPA-1 L can delivery versus a multichannel amp. I would reccomend an XPA-1 L + one XPA-200 for the surrounds. The surrounds aren't terribly important and I think it would be a decent match all around. Or if you wanted you could get an XPA-1 L and one XPA-2 (or if you wanted to go smaller - a UPA-200). But I think holding onto the XPA_1 L's is important. You could also do an XPA-3 and have it run the center and surrounds and hold onto your XPA-1 L's.
In case you're wondering, when you turn the volume up, one amp won't play louder than the other at the same volume knob setting. The gain values are the same for all those amps - 29db so no level adjustments should be needed.

XPR-5 gets my vote because that's the route I took. My buddy went from an XPR-5 to XPR-1 x 3 and XPR-2 because he could but the bang for the buck is in the XPR-5. It's a clear jump from the XPA to the XPR IMHO. I had the XPA-5 and now have the XPR-5 and XPA-2 gen2 as you see.... XPR-5 is clearly superior to the XPA-2 gen2. I listen to 60% music and my system is outstanding with the XPR-5...it's one of the highlights of my home system.

I want all three of my front channels to have the same amplification though. Go with the XPA-1Ls if you are going to be using an XMC-1 as then you'll have a truly differential signal end to end on your mains. Remember the XPA-1L is truly differential unlike the other XPA amps mentioned.

Thanks everyoneI appreciate the input, I was pretty much interested in the sound quality differences between the two units XPA-1L and the XPR5. Good information and still a touch decision
