If you leave your old Dolby surround speakers up top and put new ones at ear level you do have the beginnings of an Auro layout.

I have mixed feelings on this DTS-X and Atmos topic. In 1991 after being a 2 channel junkie as a kid, I got sucked into the concept of Dolby Surround which added two read "effects" channels. I ponied up money for the new pioneer receiver and and extra pair of speakers. Less than a year later I realized Dolby Pro-logic added the all critical center channel. New receiver, new speakers. A few years later AC-3 was introduced and I bought the new laserdisc player and another receiver and subwoofer. The DTS - new receiver blah blah. This pattern continued for an additional 15 years.
For the record, I now have a kick ass two channel set up that I love.
My point is that there is a difference between the cutting edge and the bleeding edge of technology.
I think Emotiva was wise in not gambling on paying extra for licensing on either of the NEW surround formats until those formats become mainstream. the XMC-1 incorporates the best sounding nuts and bolts expected in a processor and frankly the Dirac and exceptional d/a conversion in that piece far outweigh the transient benefits of new temporary whiz bang surround formats which will be changed or upgraded in the near future as always.
I know emotiva took a long time to release the XMC-1 but after hearing it I can't say there are many products that compete on its level in its price range at all. Just my two cents

Back on thread track, we have gotten to read a bit about the differences between Atmos and that other system from Europe (forget the name right now). I wonder what the true differences will be between Atmos and DTS:X? I certainly hope it will just be a co-existence thing like we have now. That way everyone wins. Here it is: Auro 3D

I read this to mean that DTS:X can work with different speaker layouts but the first products released will also include presents for existing common layouts (like 5.1, 7.x, Atmos configs etc..) I don't think it is DTS:X that will be changing. For example, someone has a 5.1 setup, they select the 5.1 preset, they add additional speakers and then select a new preset or configure it manually. Sort of like picture presets on displays. No self respecting videophile would pick "movie" or some other mode but rather adjust it to their tastes/needs. However, many people welcome the presets so they don't have to think. I agree ; I think the dts-uhd chipset will become more pliable with xyz speaker rendering/ positioning eventually ; if the last comments about a cirrus logic soc come to pass www.dts.com/corporate/press-releases/2014/01/dts-demonstrates-dts-uhd-decoder-using-single-chip-audio-dsp-at-consumer-electronics-show.aspx

At CES 2015, there were two DTS:X Demos: read about them hereThere was also a ATI/Theta/CAT Atmos/Auro Demo : you will find the related report hereThe reports are both interesting, with DTS:X promising to be the format that would allow the most flexibility in speaker configuration, but there is still a lot about this technology and its in-home implementation that remain to be decided, clarified, and standardized in a relatively stable home-user friendly way. I'm afraid all these demos have done so far, is to reinforce my current "on-the-fence/wait-and-see" posture, until at least the Fall of 2016. Enjoy.

I still need to have a listen to an ATMOS setup as I haven't had the privilege yet. I've always preferred DTS play ask though over Dolby. Just me though.

Saw this on Twitter today, looks like DTS will have a Q&A tomorrow on DTS:X. Might be interesting for those with questions, or who want to learn more. Get your DTS:X questions ready. Our senior program director will do a @reddit_AMA Thurs @ 2:30pm PT #DTSXunveiling

I wonder if any of this is relevant if the movie industry doesn't record audio for these formats. Who decides what sounds come out of all these extra speakers. If a bird chips on a windowsill to the right, how do you get just that sound to that speaker if it hasn't been formatted in the recording that way? If you're going to immerse me in sounds, I want them coming from the right place. I see very little 7.x content so why should I expect 7.4.8 or anything like that getting produced. maybe I just don't understand the process.
I must be missing something, but to be honest I've done no reading on the subject.
Cheers Mark

Am I the only one running a "HT" (just 7.1, maybe 7.2 in the future) who doesn't really care that much about Atmos and DTS:X? I'm interested in it and I like reading about it. I've heard Atmos and it sounds great but it really doesn't make me want to add 4-6 additional speakers in my living room (I could see this being different if you have a dedicated theater room which is a lot rarer in Europe than the US). If the XMC gets it, nice but to be honest I couldn't care less. I actually find it refreshing to jump off the upgrade bandwagon in that regard. I can wait, no problem.

I don't get it. I own an XMC. Just shared that thread because I thought a few people posting shared the thought of not wanting to add additional speakers for Atmos or Dolby X or whatever. I don't think anyone has anything negative to say about the XMC, sounds like one heck of a piece!
