Probably a stupid question so please bear with me. I'm currently using 3 channels of my XPA-5 Gen 1 amplifier to run the front LCR woofers in my actively crossed over DIY 2-way speakers. I'm using one channel to run my DIY subwoofer using a Dayton Audio UM15-22 15" Ultimax DVC Subwoofer with the 2 0hm voice coils hooked in series. I'm aware of the fact the XPA-5 isn't rated to run loads lower than 4 Ohms but can't help wondering if I could use 2 channels to run each 2 Ohm voice coil separately. I certainly don't want to damage my XPA-5 should I try this. Off topic I want to say I absolutely love the XPA-5. I'm using a miniDSP 10x10 Hd active crossover with the XPA-5 running the LCR woofers and a UPA-500 amplifier to run the LCR tweeters and am in awe of the miniDSP 10x10 Hd's capabilities. Anyway, has anyone used the XPA-5 in this fashion or this just a bad idea?

You won't damage the amp. If it's unhappy with the load it will simply go into protect mode.

That is what I'd expect the XPA-5 to do if confronted with a load it's unhappy with but would really like to hear from someone that has actually tried it, IF anyone has tried it that is. I'm running the UMC-1 subwoofer output into one input channel of the miniDSP 10x10 Hd then running the subwoofer signal out one output of the miniDSP 10x10 Hd into one channel of the XPA-5 then onto the DVC subwoofer with the coils hooked up in series. I could run the same subwoofer signal to another output of the miniDSP 10x10 Hd then into the remaining input of the XPA-5. This would allow me to run the same signal to each coil of the DVC subwoofer from two channels of the XPA-5. Of course the XPA-5 would then be seeing a load of 2 Ohms on the two channels connected to the DVC subwoofer. Search as I may I can't seem to find any information stating there may be any advantage to this. Would the subwoofer play any louder connected like this? Would this be more efficient running the subwoofer in this fashion? Or would this only serve to increase the load on the XPA-5 possibly damaging it? Just curious if anyone thinks there would be any advantage to doing this or is this just a bad idea?

This isn't a bad idea. As long as the load is 2 ohms and not lower, I don't think there will be an issue. If there is, it will go into protect, you won't damage the amp. Lonnie mentioned several of the X-series can all do 2 ohm loads with the XPA-1 pushing out something like 1800 watts @ 2 ohms ! It's not officially rated to prevent people connecting multiple 2 ohm speakers and dropping the impedance down lower...or in general being crazy with it.

My suggestion is to call Emotiva and ask them. Otherwise if you damage your amp, it won't be covered by the warranty.
