Hi everyone,
I just bought an xpa-2 as an amplifier for the two front channel speakers (rti-a9 rated at 300 rms) fed via a set of pre-out from a Pioneer Elite 7.2 rated at 120W rms per channel while in stereo mode. I was disappointed by the sound quality from the xpa-2. Although the sound is a little louder (not much, around 10 dB or less) but it really muffles. The speakers sound clearer without the xpa-2 although at a weaker level. I would hope that this amp would boost the signal to a much higher level and sound stage as it is rated at 300W rms per channel, but doesn't look like that's the case.
When I feed the xpa-2 with a pair of denon stereo integrated amp pre-out borrowed from a friend, (the amp is rated at 70W rms per channel, amp model pma-1500). Even at only 140W rms total, this denon amp is powerful enough to drive the rti speakers pretty good at 1/3 volume. Adding the xpa-2 to this amp brought the speakers to life, I have never heard music sound this good.
The answer I'm trying to get is do I really need to have a good pre-out source to drive the xpa-2? If that's the case then I'll have to invest in a good pre-amp/stereo integrated amp? I really appreciate some guidance in this matter.
Thanks, Thpham
