I'm currently in the market for a new avr. My budget is topped at $500. I had it narrowed down to the Emotiva 8100 and Denon AVR-X1100W. I had been leaning toward the Emotiva, but having to buy it online has kept the Denon in the picture. Yesterday I found a retailer in New England that is selling the NAD T748 new for $470 online. Would listen to this receiver myself but the nearest dealer is about 100 miles away. I haven't heard an NAD in years. Are they still as good as they used to be? How do the NAD and Emotiva stack up? What are their relative merits? Their strong and weak points? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, as a matter of fact I am. The one for $389 is a referb, the one I mentioned is new. I believe the new one has a 2 year warranty. Is Spearit Sound a good dealer. I also found a refurbished Denon AVR-X2100 for $388.88 at a site called www.accessories4less.com Anybody here know anything about them? I'm really liking the way the Emotiva looks, but I need to know a little more of the good, bad, and ugly. Hopefully, there's a lot of the first and only a little of the latter!

Both Spearit and Accessories for Less are legitimate resellers. Not familiar with the gear your mentioned.

I had a Nad t755 for awhile and upgraded to a anthem Mrx510 and I can say the nad was smoother and more relaxing sound with a fair amount of detail but what impressed me the most was the power that it had.The Anthem is more detailed and more exciting sound that works better for movies but nad was better for music but that might be cause it had less fatigue on the ears. Both are budget prices but work well. One more thing to think about is room correction if you need it.

I've noticed that the Emotiva 8100 has insanely good manual eq. What's it like for auto setup? Does the NAD even have auto setup? How finely grained is it's manual eq?

Dang. They've gone and put a refurbished 8100 on sale for $410. Now my decision is getting harder again!

I of course have a biased vote for the Emotiva , there has yet to be Emotiva gear that has let me down in both build and sound quality.

About the only bad thing I hear about the Emotiva 8100 is that it sometimes has handshake issues with HDMI hookups. That also seems to be the one bad thing about the NAD T748. Wish I could listen to them both paired with my speakers: Definitive Technology BP8b for the mains, with a Triangle NOXA minor ES for the center. Shopping for surrounds too. My JBL's are older than dirt.

I had a T752 for almost 10 years, then it broke... Great AVR, it seemed like it never run out of power and I have full range speakers, no sub. I now have the 8100 and VERY happy with it. I consider it at least as good as the NAD, if not better. Gobs of power, phenomenal EQ capability, built like a tank. By the way, although close in price with the T742, the 8100 really compares with the T75x series.

The def techs sound excellent with emotiva

Thanks for the extra info about The NAD's and which series more closely compares to the 8100. I've just gotten through reading a number of user reviews on the Denon and its problem on the wifi front. That was the only reason I was considering it. Down to the NAD and Emotiva. On refurbished equipment, it's my understanding there is no return, but you still get full warranty. Is that correct?

pallpoul, Yeah I tried my bp8's with a polk sub crossed over at 80hz if I remember right and I LOST bass response. The deftechs have such good bass that unless you're using a very good sub it does more harm than good. Thanks for the info with how they sound with the 8100. About how long does it take to ship?
