Cnet recently posted an article titled: "The affordable heavyweight champion: Outlaw Audio Model 5000 power amplifier" www.cnet.com/news/the-affordable-heavyweight-champion-outlaw-audio-model-5000-power-amplifier/I am fairly new to Emotiva and have heard about Outlaw but I have no experience with any of their products. I was hoping that those of that you that are more familiar with the implications of amplifier specifications could shed some light on how this amp compares to Emotiva's UPA-500 (RIP), and the their XPA-5. I currently have an XPA-200 and an XDA-2 and I'm very pleased with both units. I was certain that Emotiva was the king of the "bang for buck" hill so the article struck my interest.

COMPARE SPECIFICATIONS and you may answer yourself... Simply do the MATH. CHEERS While I've already done this, some companies tend to be optimistic with their ratings, furthermore an amplifier can never fully be judged by paper-specs which is why I was interested in hearing from some members on the forum as to their personal experiences or things they've heard about Outlaw.

Bench tested (as well as subjective commentary): www.audioholics.com/amplifier-reviews/outlaw-5000Handily outperforms spec in most cases. I'm actually looking at pairing one of these with a used UMC-200 (I have wanted to do something like this for a while now, but the UPA-500 was not quite "enough". and the XPA-5 "too much" and broke the budget).

It seems to me time has come for Emotiva to release a successor to the UPA-500............................. Or something like it, many channels without the high power, you know,,,,, for surounds and maybe apply to Atmos if it comes to fruition, a multitasker at a journeymans price point.

it's a nice amp with plenty of power at the price point. emotiva has dropped the ball at this point by not having an multichannel amp's anymore at this price point. perhaps they are going to release something in the future to compete with this. i wonder if other companies will be releasing amps to fill this void in the market? emotiva really kinda had it on lockdown once.
since most people have a conventional 5 channel system, i wonder if someone will release a 6 channel amp to cover surround channels 6 & 7 as well as 4 channels of ATMOS because i would buy that if the price is right!
i am thinking of getting ready for ATMOS & DTS-X and that 5 channel amp by outlaw is looking good. emotiva, take notice, time to get a new priced to sell multichannel amp out that is real easy on the wallet. ATMOS is here, and it's here to stay for a good while with more & more movies being released in the format and DTS-X (or something from DTS) is soon to follow!

I wouldn't say Emotiva has dropped the ball. They already said they are working on a successor to the U-Series of products. If I am not mistaken at least some will be 1RU in height as well. Of course, an unreleased product doesn't do much for anyone but I'm sure they'll be back in the game in a big way pretty soon(ish)

Nevertheless, ever since Emotiva discontinued the U-Series there has been a demand for a budget multichannel power amplifier that deliver clean power; for the moment being Outlaw will be one to supply this demand. As I've grown attached to Emotiva, I feel the need to see what they will release for this market; though, I have to say I'm tempted to dip my toes into what Outlaw has to offer.

Those spécifications remind me of the defunct UPA-5, which I have just purchased used. I am realy interested to see what Emotiva has in store to replace the UPA series. I am betting on a new series of class D amplifiers. Why do I say that? Just take a look at the new Airmotives 3B and it's 30Watt / channel Class D amplification.
Can't wait to hear the new podcast next week....
Stay tuned

Stay tuned everyone as Emotiva has, and will continue to have something for everyone. Lots of excitement for 2015 coming up. Keep the faith.

They are currently missing several things that no self-respecting audio company should be without - ever! Speakers and entry level amps make for a glaring hole in the lineup and I'm NOT interested in wall or ceiling mounted speakers - ever!
For speakers its been way too long since the Reference line was discontinued - the only mention of new speakers was some sketchy photo of a speaker about a year ago (SOP?) - then the 'baby' Airmotiv made its debut yesterday. Not that its going to fill the needs/wants of anyone other than someone looking for computer speakers. My 'computer speakers' are my main L/R speakers - soon to be swapped out for a pair of Salk SongTowers. So thats the type of speaker I'm looking for - not some small computer speaker!
Emotiva should have continued the Reference line and the original UPA amp line IMO. Great sounding speakers like those don't come along every day. The replacement speakers and amps were lightweight at best. After all - when you discontinue the UPA-1 and it reappears as the XPA-100 (with some 'tweaking') you know it was pretty good - same with the UPA-2 which magically became the XPA-200 - also with some tweaking - and a larger price tag.

Funny you say that, as the opposite happened to me. I was considering to get the Outlaw 975 + 7075, but space for separate is currently a problem for me and some unexpected expenses cut my budget. When I saw the 8100 on Amazon for $450 (which I had looked at previously, but probably not with the attention it deserved), that provided a strong motivation. At that price and for the performance is capable of, it is worth to keep as a second system no matter what I may get in the future. And so I jumped on the Emotiva train. So far I am liking the journey .

Sorry could not resist... ). I am on the market for a pair of <$1,000 bookshelf speakers to replace my current ones as the L/R mains going with my Fusion 8100. I'd LOVE to have Emotiva to consider as an option. I am not in a rush (I am definitely NOT an impulse buyer), however I hope Emotiva has something in store for release by the end of this year. Hopefully, if they do, it will be a sealed or front-ported design. Rear-port is no good for my current room setup. I will keep my finger crossed.

One way many people look at power amps is dollar per watt, while it's not the end all for evaluation it's a good starting point. The Outlaw comes in at a sweet spot of $1 per watt (120 x 5). I did a quick chart comparing the current Emo amps and then speculated on what they could do to round out the XPA-x00 series. This doesn't take into account the 1RU designs they've discussed, but does include comments (Keith?) made that class A/B is still better in this price range (don't know how they could do a multi-channel A/B amp in a 1RU design). Anyway one thing it shows is that even though the XPA-7 is relatively expensive, it's still a good price using this criteria (and the XPA-5 is in a very good place!) The last two entries are PURE SPECULATION, I have no knowledge they would do anything like this.

That's a nice analysis thanks for sharing, I also have a spreadsheet for everything my wife hates it . Both Outlaw and Emotiva are known for going will over the published specs (unlike most AVR manufacturers), bringing down their dollar per watt cost. For instance, the Outlaw will actually do 135W@8ohms clean continuous all channels driven (only $0.89 per watt )

(and this is at full price) Just look at virtually every other brand and see if you come close. Even Outlaw's 7500 at 5x200 is at $1.60 a watt. (excellent amp BTW if you need a 5ch balanced design) For multichannel, the XPA-5 and 7 is where most should be looking if you want a great value amp.

Its pretty obvious Emotiva left a BIG hole that Outlaw has filled. They may not care as it looks like they are looking at a new price and customer structure. I know I'm left with few choices that look as good as the Outlaw 5000 for a modest room. And considering Outlaw cared enough to make an amp in this range maybe they should be rewarded.
