For a 7.1.4 system I'd run 11 x Airmotive 6's, no need for a stand alone power amp Fully balanced interconnections and all channels perfectly sonically matched, so no problem there Cheers Gary

I would also consider some powered speakers for all but my mains and centers. It would be cool if Emotiva started making some powered speakers (fully balanced of course) with appropriate power and for use as the ceiling/high/surround speakers.

Mark No problem with using Airmotives or Stealths for high/surround speakers. Ceiling speakers require some differences due to the hanging cone, maybe a topic for another thread................. emotivalounge.proboards.com/thread/41714/airmotives-stealths-ceiling-speakersCheers Gary

Holy moley! 21 amps! What do you think of your weis dac? The Weiss DAC2 is like my Nike Pegasus 29 running shoes: perfect for the job and never draws attention. I don't even bother to turn it off. BTW, I now hate Nike for messing up the current Pegasus 31. They changed the midsole and my feet hurt after 10 km. I have sent them back. My good old Pegasus 29 are kept aside to run marathons. It just hit me that 2 Marantz MM8003 8-channel amps would solve my problem nicely as 5+8+8=21! I thought about keeping the XPR-5 where it is and getting 3 XPA-7 but since Emotiva isn't shipping them to EU... I might start to search for used MM8003 here in EU. They are 140W/ch (2 channels driven) which is perfect for the Surrounds and Heights and for the Mids and Tweeters of the LCR. The XPR-5 would power the woofers of the LCR and the 1st pair of Surrounds. Thoughts? Sounds like a plan to me. And if Emotiva launches new product that is available in EU in the future, you can upgrade if you like. I'm blessed to have 22 amp channels available now with minimum 150W/channel up to 7 channels at 350W/channel. I'm set on amps, just need ceiling speakers and an XMR-1!

My whole point about a 45 - 75 wpc amp was strictly for the hights and surround speakers, not the main 7 to 10 speakers but all of the other enhancement speakers around the room. Surly not all of the speakers need to have great power requirements to achieve the Atmos effect! Or have I missed something? Confusing! Main 7-10 speakers? In commercial Atmos, besides subs there are only two kinds of speakers: up to 5 large "ear level" screen speakers (LCR + 2 in between hem) and the rest are satellites. These satellites must all meet the same specs and should be powered the same. Hence for a full blown Atmos 9.1.6 with the XMR-1, it makes sense to use a high power 3-channel amp for LCR and a medium power 12-channel amp for the rest.

OK, then it's 5 , not 7-10,,,, whatever, that wasn't the point. The point was that not all channels would require the same higher power amps, but higher and lower powered amps. That's the point.

Agree Nick ; considering the not insubstantial dynamic range put into 5/7ch lossless soundtracks these days compared to the hi pass filtered surround tracks of older pro logic systems a 7ch 200+ watt power amp for the bed tracks and a separate similar class d for the ceilings like this wyred4sound.com/products/multichannel/mc-7150 would put less pressure on the real estate Considering the xmr range doesnt have a 7ch option a rejigged sherbourn class H pa350 would make a welcome reappearance maybe ? Chances are very good for class D too ; Keith mentioned this elsewhere beside what Dan said ; Good to hear and good for the planet If class D is good enough for our subwoofers

What's the point in paying $1600 for the W4S (7x120 W benchtest) if you can have the XPA-7 for the same amount (7x200W)?
IF you can have it ofcourse!
Anyway, even if the ceiling speakers need less power, that's on average! All satellites should ideally be identical, direct firing, same power. 120 Watt each should be enough with decent efficiency speakers, but only if you pay less than XPA-7 money...

I wasn't suggesting that Emo develop a 16 channel distribution amp. Instead, I was expressing interest in a full line of balanced XPRs -- 2, 5, and 7 channel amps. The question is was Dan referring to balanced input to output [ a fair assumption admittedly ] or single ended circuitry with balanced outputs like the xmc1 and a lot of expensive pre pro's ; or can we put this to rest - duplicate circuitry for 16 channels is a chassis and a half Good chance imho that the atmos ceiling ? surround speakers may be class d depending on interpretation of what Dan said [ or possibly just for the new entry pre-pro ? ] Makes sense ; you dont need 200w/ch for sound object steering And class d is of course very efficient ; especially putting out the watts per unit surface area .. for want of a better phrase .. Found this interesting pdf for a balanced class d pwm [pulse width modulation] design ; intriguing www.crownaudio.com/media/pdf/amps/bcapaper.pdfI assume the XMR will have a pair of stereo balanced input-to-output, as well as single-ended to balanced for the multichannels, a la the now defunct $7,500 Denon AVP-A1HDCI. I would like a 7-channel, 200W balanced amp for the fronts, center, and surrounds. The new Class D (presumably single-ended) amps would indeed be ideal for the in-ceiling Atmos/DTS:X speakers. ATI is the only manufacturer (of which I am aware) that currently provides these types of amps at reasonable prices (and exceptional quality). Dan and Lonnie -- begging again for some info!

Thats whats up in the air indeed precisely how its balanced ; I recall a post that said the RMC1 at the time would be totally balanced input to output and not just for the 2ch analogs . If this was to happen it would be certainly unique amongst top of the line units except for the somewhat outdated avp-a1 which is totally balanced btw on the multichannels [ the size helps explain this ] I hope that unlike the avp though there is no video processing and dont expect any.. . btw Class d amps are much more amenable to shipping to Aus too www.audioholics.com/av-preamp-processor-reviews/denon-avp-a1hdci/Denonbalanced.jpg/image_miniwww.audioholics.com/av-preamp-processor-reviews/denon-avp-a1hdci/avpparts.jpg/image_miniwww.audioholics.com/av-preamp-processor-reviews/denon-avp-a1hdci/design-overview

This is unlike almost everything on the market, but for the aforementioned Denon and a few other processors priced in the 5-digit range. Marantz AV8802 and similar "balanced" processors are not truly balanced -- their topology consists of single-ended circuitry all the way to output, at which point they are simply rewired. I consider this to be a "fake" balanced topology, and from everything I have read on this board about the RMC and now the XMR, I fully expect true balanced, double-circuitry in the XMR.

Yes ever since I read a audioholics ? review Ile never assume xlr outputs are even balanced ; they may be wired single ended like integra did once I have the same inkling your on the right track [ and hope so] ; the price and room required for 16 balanced channels means it will be a packed chassis like the xmc1's innards Beside the erc 3 is totally balanced as are the matching xpr1 monoblocks and the common mode noise reduction will help with hdmi and other emi/rf etc ; the apr figures may be below the nominal noise floor of the oscilloscopes
