I have a UMM-6 mic calibrated from Cross Spectrum. I was really looking forward to being able to use this mic with Dirac. From what I see with REW, the mic really agrees with what I hear.
I fired up Dirac full, loaded the UMM-6 90 degree narrow band filter, and used the new "chair" calibration (vs all points on a couch, or points in an auditorium).
I slightly level matched my mains with my surrounds using that new ability in Dirac Full.
I ran the calibration and set a bit more of a house curve than normal Dirac wanted to, bringing up the lowest end by almost 4db I think while rolling off the highs by around 2db once 20khz is reached.
I am ecstatic with the results!!!
So far I have listed to 2 channel music (Flac files) in both stereo mode and in DPL IIx music. Somehow the imaging is both more precise and more enveloping at the same time. I like a song called "Divisionary" by Ages and Ages. It has quite a few layered vocals once it gets going. I have listened to it many, many times, but now I am hearing faint background singers that I never did before. I am really loving the level of detail retrieval as well as spatial cues that are being brought out of the music.
I like to also use Ingrid Michaelson's "The way I am" for a bass track, especially at the very beginning. If bass is boomy or uneven in the room, the various frequencies played by the stand up bass in this track will really boom and overpower, not to mention being muddy. This calibration allows the stand up bass to come through very even, allowing one to easily hear the string reverberation against the instrument. Bass on other tracks is super tight and powerful, allowing my four Seaton subs to truly shine as they should.
On PLIIX music mode, the integration of the surrounds with the fronts is better than ever. I was a little disappointed with the lack of a seamless transition from the front left and right to rears. Not anymore. The side imaging where there are no speakers is VASTLY improved.
So the upgrade for me was huge, huge, huge.
This is the first time that I do not feel that my room is overdamped. This calibration has really opened it up to both pinpoint imaging as well as spaciousness beyond the confines of the 17 x 25 venue. I imagine it has to do with the UMM 6 mic that I think is a great value. But whatever the reason, I am a happy camper! Best I have ever heard in a home setting.
Now to watch some movies...
