For the first time in my life, I have an opportunity to build a media room and am super excited. I have always been a 2.1 music person but am keen now to explore HT as well. The dimensions of the room will be 20ftX19ft with fairly high ceiling. Being a new construction, I have the ability to specify to the builder the things I'd like in it including wiring, flooring, internet access, color of walls and ceilings etc. I will be using the room largely for 2.1 stereo listening and 5.2 HT. However, I would like your thoughts on what all I should do now so that I am future proofing the room for both stereo and critical movie sessions (possibly 7.2 or even 9.2). Appreciate all your help - Thanks. If you really want to get into it... change the size of your room... before you build.. like 8 x 13 x 20 would give you much better acoustics and a room to work with placing speakers... acoustics 101 is the place too start on your mission.. cheers..

My family moved to our new home last October with a dedicated media room. When you wanted to have certain features included in your media room, don't just trust your subcontractor to install what you wanted. You have to stay on top of all things and check the progress as often as possible. For example, I asked specifically to install cat6 wires all over the house including media room but when they finished the cabling, it wasn't the cat6 like I asked but it was cat5e instead. For now cat5e cable works fine but I wanted to have cat6 for some future proofing. This is just one example and unless you constantly watch over what they install, it may not be the one you want in the first place. Anyway, my entire house is hard wired with cat5e cabling and it is very handy to properly networking your entire home and not just your media room.
My media room has some sound dampening/proofing but I wish I had installed better sound proofing. Be sure to install best sound proofing materials that you can afford. And for the wall insulation, if you opted for foam spray, it will be very difficult to modify in the future due to their nature of expansion. And for all the cablings in the media room, use conduit/pvc pipe as much as possible for the future cable needs. Install in-wall speaker wires everywhere you think you might need and then some more. Who knows how many speakers require for the future processor. Congratulation on your new home purchase and good luck with your media room. You will love your new dedicated media room!
