I'm in the market for a CDP myself. However, you probably want to compare the ERC to the CD6005 or 6004 - two other choices beside the ERC that I'm checking out.
ERC doesn't play SACD which the SA8005 is.

I'll bet they both sound really good.

I just bought a ERC-3 to replace my CD6004. They do sound different, both have a good sound stage. I almost prefer the sound of the Marantz, it is smoother sounding and seems to have a little better bass. I need to listen to the ERC-3 more before I decide on which one to keep in my 2 channel system.

Would the quality of the DAC affect sound quality more than the transport?

Would the quality of the DAC affect sound quality more than the transport? Yes, the exception might be with a really poor transport playing a not in good condition disc.

Which has the better DAC - The Emotiva XMC-1 or the EMC-3? Im placing a bet on the XMC-1, especially if you prefer the sound of a Burr-Brown DAC ive owned the XMC-1, ERC-2, ERC-3 simultaneously and the winner in my book ,,,,,,,, both balanced and unbalanced is,,,,,,,, the ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, XMC-1

Me too, but I don't have a way to compare myself, so I'm looking for others to share their experiences.

Which has the "better" DAC is rather subjective, totally in the ears of the listener. Plus it's not just the DAC chip itself but how it is implemented, the circuitry that supports and surrounds it. Personally I like the way Emotiva (Lonnie et al) engineers their DAC's sound. They all (UMC-1, UMC-200, XDA-2, ERC-3, BigEgo) have sounded good to me, consistent across my experiences. In general I have a preference for TI/BurrBrown DAC's and conversely I'm not a fan of Sabre DAC's (as found in Oppo's), whilst some people have exactly the opposite opinions. The single thing that strikes me with all of Emotiva's DAC implementations is that they are very true to live. Some people like that accuracy, some prefer a more harmonic sound. There's no right or wrong, or better or worse, just personal preferences.
Cheers Gary

Your completely wrong and I totally agree with you the best sounding DAC is the one i happen to be listening to at any given moment in time. The Oppo is the best,,,,,unless your listening to the Emotiva,,,,but then again my Yamaha sounds really great and it has a Burr-Brown too!! Does any of this make any sense at all??? I sure hope not!!!!!

No offense to Emotiva but Marantz has a history of good sounding players
But get an Oppo, It has more features--especially for streaming

Honestly, I don't love the sound I get on my Oppo BDP-93 when playing a CD. It rocks when playing DVDs/BluRays, of course.

Sort of - my point is that it sounds great with DD/DTS 5.1/7.1, but not as great with CD audio.
The point of my questions is to determine the benefits of a CD player versus just streaming FLAC (or other lossless format) to the XMC-1.

Ultimately the ERC-3 is pretty darn good. I have heard the Marantz. Either one could keep me happy, but since I have an Oppo and listen through the XMC-1. I would never find out.

.... and conversely I'm not a fan of Sabre DAC's (as found in Oppo's), whilst some people have exactly the opposite opinions. Cheers Gary Gary I agree about the Sabre DAC sound, don't care for it either but did for awhile. I've owned 3 of the things now and wouldn't do it again. But it is important to point out that the Oppo 103 does NOT use Sabre DAC chips, but rather a Cirrus Logic chip which to me sounds demonstrably better than the Sabre's. The CL chip in the 103 is still a 32 bit device.

I preferred my ERC-2 over my Marantz CD6004 as far as sound. I thought the Emotiva had a larger sound to it.. Maybe it was in my head. I ended up keeping the Marantz because the ERC-2 had a lot of disc noise.
