A big thanks to the responders "why does my system sound bad

It appears my square room is to blame for the lousy sound. This was a new room for my stuff. Some non standard speaker placement improves the sound, so it looks like move to another room or some acoustic room treatments! I never would have guessed the the room dimensions were the culprit. Thanks for pointing me in this direction!
