I've heard of using the lightning out on an iPhone to USB to a DAC. Do you need a special adapter?
I was going to sell my XDA-2, but when I realized what people were willing to pay, I decided it would be better as part of a desktop or bedroom system. If I use it in my bedroom, I'd want my iPhone to be the source; but I'd want the XDA-2 to do the D to A.
Any ideas or input is appreciated.

An Apple AirPort Express with a mini TOSLink to TOSLink cable is the best solution. It's wireless so you can keep your iPhone in your pocket. The current one is $99 but the older models used, would work fine too. An older Apple TV would also work, but not the current model, it has no optical/digital output (if you do get an older Apple TV you want a regular TOSLink cable).

It sort of depends on how you want to use it....
The "Lightning to USB" adapter should allow you to connect a modern Apple phone directly to the USB input on the DAC (we've used them with the Egos and they work fine). Note, however, that if you have a USB POWERED DAC like the Egos, you have to add an AC powered USB hub in between - because the phone won't put out enough current to run an Ego or other USB powered DAC. However, with a line-powered DAC like the XDA-2 it should work fine.
Or you can get an "IPod dock" with a digital output. Note that not all Apple devices will work with an iPod dock, and many iPod docks don't have digital outputs, but many do (so check the details). For example, the Pure i20 iPod dock works with most older iPods and iPhones, gives you a nice coax digital output which you can connect to the XDA-2, and costs under $100.
