Hi all, I was about to recommend a friend to buy one of those, I have seen some available at a very good price (ebay), while researching I found a lot of problems that model had, now I'm having second thoughts, I would like some input from you guys...

I had one; very buggy and full of quirks and problems. It never worked right. Real pain in the ass. Get one of the newer models. /blair

It took me two tries to 'discover' how crappy the UMC-1 was. If you gave me one I'd chuck it in the trash rather than chance it screwing with my amps and speakers.

Wow, you guys are brutal.
The DAC in the UMC-1 is about the same as the XDA-1. It's signal to noise ratio is nothing to write home about. The digital input handshake is about two to four measures of music long.
It handles most of the surround formats very competently. It also has a very nice analog preamp section.
For a cheap preamp/processor, it is very nice. But it's no PT-7030 and certainly not an XMC-1.

Thanks guys, I'll keep looking, my friend doesn't want to spend much, I'll see if I can convince him to spend around $500 or so, and if so I'll recommend maybe an Outlawaudio 975, any thoughts on that one?

He should be able to get a PT-7030 for $500. It is an excellent processor easily worth twice that price.

I am the original owner of my UMC-1 and have no problems with it. Although other users have had issues with them and I can certainly understand their negative perspective.
I use it daily for 2 channel as well as surround decoding. If you can find a decent one dirt cheap it is an option. I will replace mine when Emotiva's big processor comes out. Right now I want to get a great 2 channel pre amp first.
Good Luck!

Why not a UMC-200? The P-EQ feature alone is worth what an Outlaw 975 goes for. There's a UMC-200 in the JadeDesign Store on eBay right going for $465 or Best Offer. Have your friend try the Best Offer option, you just never know what Emotiva will accept.

I had a UMC-1 for a year or two and it worked fairly well for me. My biggest complaint was that it sometimes took several seconds to switch to an HDMI source and begin to show picture and audio. Other than that it was fairly stable and the sound quality was night and day better than my Marantz 6005 that I upgraded from. Considering that I bought it second hand for $375, and got an upgrade card along with it for that price, I think that was a real steal!
After owning the unit for a while, I upgraded to a UMC-200 mainly for the Paremetric EQ. The HDMI switching was much faster and more reliable, sound quality was a tiny bit better I think, and the PEQ REALLY helped get my sub under control in my room(s).
Bottom line is this: UMC-1 was way better than a standard AVR in terms of sound quality for not much money, but the UMC-200 is a VERY well rounded unit that has served me well for the last few years. Unless you are always chasing the best, I feel like the UMC-200 could be an "end game" processor for most people. I didn't feel that way about the UMC-1.

Get an UMC-200 - only Little quirks, I still own one from the first Batch. SQ-wise it is better than Onkyo PR-SC 886, 5507, 5508 and Marantz AV-7005 - I compared with all of them. The PEQ is also really good if you know how to measure and tweak.

I had a UMC-1 and it worked fine for me, my uncle owns it now and he loves it. But I found the UMC-200 to be just as good sounding, maybe slightly better for some formats, with a smaller form factor and much less quirky. A UMC-1 would be fine for someone who has simple requirements and doesn't mind a bit of fiddling. The UMC-200 would be my recommendation for someone who wants "a plug it in and just use it" solution. In a back to back sound contest my ears, with my system, in my room the Outlaw runs 3rd.
Cheers Gary
