I have a UMC-1 that is not buggy but has an HDMI video handshake problem due to the fact that my sources are a newer version of HDMI and the UMC-1 doesn't always recognize the video and therefore won't pass it to the display. If you can live without video pass thru it is great! Or if you have components that are a couple years old the HDMI would still be recognized by the UMC-1 and pass the video with no problem.
Mine is not in use so if you want to buy it you can but realize you may have a video handshake issue depending on your sources but no issue with audio what so ever

Thanks.

That is definitely a good way to do it and depending on if his BD/DVD has an HDMI in he can route his Directv or other into that HDMI so he can use two sources. I have one other issue with my UMC-1, a buddy of mine had it before me and he tried to change the color of the led around the volume knob with no success. That caused the volume knob to now click when you turn it, its a physical click not in the audio of the system but if you use the UMC-1 remote control which I do rather than physically turning the knob you don't experience the clicking noise.
$150 if he is interested

I have 2, with 1 I use daily on my main man-cave setup. It can be slow switching between sources and/or get confused when switching, but that's just more of annoyance as it will work just not always instantly. Sound is excellent in 7 channels that I run from it. My sources connected to it are: HTPC (I5 based), DirectTV cable box, CD player, Sony BR player. They all work just fine with it, just can be slow sometimes.
Forgot to mention - the TV is a 60" LG Plasma. I think I got it a year or so ago when they were closing out all their plasmas.

I am the original owner of my UMC-1 and have no problems with it. Although other users have had issues with them and I can certainly understand their negative perspective. I use it daily for 2 channel as well as surround decoding. If you can find a decent one dirt cheap it is an option. I will replace mine when Emotiva's big processor comes out. Right now I want to get a great 2 channel pre amp first. Good Luck! Similar experience here. Bought mine on closeout special with the final firmware revision, and it never gave me any grief. One feature I really liked about it was the ability to create "virtual" sources by pairing any audio source with any video source - great for mixed media entertainment. One "feature" of which I wasn't fond was the sluggish HDMI switching. It soldiered on for a few years in my primary system until I replaced it with an XMC-1, but is still faithfully serving me as the pre/pro for my bedroom setup. Cheers! T-

Any UMC-1 users out there successfully using the Apple TV (4th Gen?) I've used the previous generations with no issue, HDMI connection to the HDMI 2 plug on the UMC-1. But with the 4th Gen everything works for a bit, but then it drops the signal and goes blank after about 2 minutes. I initially blamed it on Apple so they replaced. Same issue. I have another 4th Gen that I use with no problems on my UMC-200. Any known compatibility issues?

My normal routine is to turn off the UMC-1 each night. Or so I thought. I then realized that being in Stand By mode, wasn't really off. I also know that HDMI connections are notoriously fussy. So I turned the UMC-1 off with the switch at the back (truly off.) Reconnected the Apple TV, and turned everything back on. It appears that this resolved the issue. I've been watching for a couple of hours with no issue.

Does anyone know if there were any more firmware updates for the UMC-1 newer than ver. 7.4.19, I think was the last one I got. Just wanted to see if they ever fixed the remaining problems, like HDMI input for DTV just dropping the audio (switching inputs usually brings audio back)very annoying.
