Well, Here I am once again. I tried it.... But I didn't like it. I tried going just the receiver route without an Amp that is. I am disabled (still) and I'm wondering if anyone has heard of some high quality digital Amps that I might look into. I am unable to lift or move big heavy amps due to my handicap, but.. man... I have to have my audio fix. And let me tell ya, going with just a receiver is not cutting it. So, though I've never tried it, I MIGHT just have to go for a digital amp. or a light regular amp of some kind. Any help you might be able to provide will be most welcomed. I'm thinking of going with the Denon X6200W receiver with outputs. I've not been around here much and have really fallen behind in terms of keeping current. So, what's new? What's going on? Anything?

It depends on how much power you are looking for. Emotiva is releasing some digital amps. There are a few in a new line called Emersa and a 150W Monoblock that looks to be in the Pro Stealth line. Nothing is out yet, but coming out at some unspecified future time that seems to be "soon".

I used to own a first generation XPA-5. I sold that once my disability got out of hand and I couldn't move it any longer. If I remember correctly, I think that had 200 watts per channel. Has anyone heard these new SOON to be released Emersa Amps at 150 watts? Is that going to be enough for say 3, 5, or 7 channeled home theaters?

You might look at Class D Audio and Red Dragon Audio too.

What's a DIGITAL amp?
For switching amps the NCore is a good choice for the DIY guy. No heavy lifting needed, either, since they'll sell you a SMPS to match. I think it was Parts Express which had the B&O ASP250 module which INCLUDES a power supply on-board. Make either 5x monos or all the way to a 5 channel powerhouse. Need only incidental wiring, speaker binding posts and enclosure. 250@8 or 500@4 should 'bout do it.

Forgot to mention that I do have a crown professional amp, XLS1500. The one really painful thing is that there is no trigger. I guess it sounds fine. Seemed a little dry to me on music. Lots of power for TV/hT.
I just replaced it with a pair of XPA100 and they are better for music. With limited time and no A to B comparison.

How often you you have to move the Amp?
I just bought the best amps I could afford, according to sound; and on the rare occasion it must be moved, I ask someone to give a hand... Sound quality trumps weight, in my book.

I have a debilitating painful very misunderstood Neurological nerve condition called CRPS, nicknamed the Suicide Disease, due to pain and lack of mobility. CRPS is a Monster that I am sure will be in Hades at the end of time. I truly truly am not able to have an amp that even needs to be moved once. Help or no help, it doesn't matter. It just won't work. Been there. Done that. And you are so correct, I miss that sound. But, I've learned to be a realist in terms of my disease. Thank you for your post!

First, I am sorry to hear of your disability. Second, if sound quality and low weight are your priorities, I strongly recommend the Hypex nCore Amps. They sound great, are so light that I actually hung mine on the wall like a picture frame using ordinary picture frame wall mounts, and are very easy to build. I use a pair of monoblocks for my FR/FL (and I have an xpa-5 for the rest). Emotiva is coming out with a Class D line that looks promising, but we don't know the sound or weight yet. Mark (PS...I confess I cringe when people call class D "digital". There are not digital in the sense that you send in a digital signal. Best is to call them class D, which is actually a naming convention unrelated to digital.)

Glad you can at least keep your sense of humor about it! I do truly hope you can manage it well. A buddy has such chronic pain that he can barely function day to day due to long term back issues. Music is his only relief.

The Crown XLS DriveCore series amps are light and sound very good. The XLS-1002/1502/2002/2502 amps differ from the 1000/1500/2000/2500 amps in a number of things. The newer lineup have 12v trigger on/off which is nice - and they have a more flexible crossover filter/DSP built in. I use a Panamax to power my amps up. It works for me. I would suggest trying out either the past or current Crown DriveCore amps. The 1500 is a bargain IMO @ $299.I paid a bit less for mine but I'd willingly pay $299 - the sound is as good as any amp I've owned - and I have owned many amps in the past few years alone. How can you go wrong with a 3 year warranty and gobs of power for that price? With 525wpc on tap (4ohms) it can't be touched at twice that for a new amp. The only caveat with these amps - and any class d amp - don't use them with highly sensitive speakers such as Klipsch and BIC America horn loaded tweeter speakers. As often as not most will have some buzz/hum noise with no source playing. I'm in a similar state as you. I have back problems from an industrial accident many years ago that is not getting better - just the opposite in fact. Heavy amps are not going to find their way into my audio rack. - which is the beauty with these Crown class d amps. The three of mine together weigh just under 30#. If you are interested in buying used the Rotel RMB- RMB-1085 is a very good 5 channel class d amp in a 14# package. Very light and plenty of power. I owned one for a time and enjoyed it very much. It uses the very good Bang & Olufsen modules that produce 100/180wpc into 8/4ohms. They are available on ebay and Audiogon from time to time. Rotel also marketed class d in 6 channel as well as 2 channel amps with 250wpc. There are many options available in new and used class d amps. When Emotiva brings their class d amps to market I'm tempted to try one out but I'm very happy with the sound from the Crown amps.
