We had some new flooring installed in our theater space(took about a week). Finally last night I was able to start putting the room back together. I added a few Banana Binding Posts(model: 3324) to do some wire clean up that my wife wanted me to for awhile. Anyway, I got them all hooked up and everything seemed fine. I decided to pull out my SPL meter(even though it was about an hour after my sleep time), and went through all the channels leveling it to 85db like I normally do. I got to my LS and it was signifantly lower(approx 10db lower than the other channels). I found it was weird but started turning up the trim level on my umc200 and BANG!!!!! SPARKS FLYING!!!! A LITTLE SMOKE!!! AND INTO PROTECT MODE IT WENT. I unplugged everything and tried to turn it back on. It turned back on(did it's little flash thing), then into protect mode it went again. The red light indicator on the LS was blinking so I tried again, but to not avail. I called emotiva today and they couldn't give me a decent estimate of what it would cost to get it fixed. Here is a basic breakdown: $40 for shipping each way $75 diagnostic fee $225 if it's just the LS channel and nothing else was damaged. What should I do? I actually need 7 channels and was planning on adding another 2 channel later(for dolby atmos/dtsx--5.2.4), but that probably won't be for 2 years or so. Options: Just try to get it fixed? I saw somebody on the selling a upa7 on the board. He wants $550+shipping and paypal. Seems steep because I think they were originally sold for $500. How much of a step down is that from the xpa series? Should I buy a xpa5 g2 for $899? Bite the bullet and go for the g3? The Monoprice Monolith seemed intriging: www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=14566I should note my setup(in case people are on their phone): Klipsch RF-7: sensitivity: 102db Klipsch RC-7: sensitivity: 98db Klipsch RS-7: sensitivity: 98db Emo UAC-8.2: sensitivity: 88db

Ouch... General rule = The more channels an amp has, the more likely it is to have problems. I'm not a fan of multi-channel amps, but that's just me...
Were I you, I'd consider either 7 monos or three stereos & a mono. Of course, this is an "if you have the space" option.
Also, and I know you already know this, but it bears repeating - ventilation is critical.
I wouldn't spend much money on effects channels. Maybe even a pro, class-D amp would be fine for them. The main R/L front amps ARE important, since they're used for stereo. I'd spend my budget on an XPA-2, gen. 2 for the front R/L, and economize elsewhere.
Happy shopping.
Boom
PS: IMHO, the XPA-2 is the most reliable, best sounding, and best value of all the Emotiva amps.

UPA-7 seems pretty high to me; you're better off waiting for the BasX 7 channel. A couple other options: - take it to a local electronics repair and get their thoughts; amps aren't difficult for them to work on. I had a Parasound of mine fixed many years ago that way - there's an XPA-5g1 in the Emporium for $500 + shipping. That's more than fair, imo. Nothing wrong with your XPA-5 G2 or G3 ideas either; each good for its own reasons so really only you can decide but it won't be a bad decision regardless.

Sucks!
Prob in the end the cheapest idea would be a new gen 2 xpa-5.
Yeah xpa-2 and go cheap with a 5-7 channel amp for the rest but you'll still spend near the same on a xpa-5 and obviously less then getting something else to go with it.
New xpa-5 and 5 year warranty.
Yeah I feel it's a waste having a xpa-3 and xpa-2 for surround and front wide when also using 2 mono blocks for the mains. They've been good to me so far after 4 years and obviously cheaper then replacing them.

Also did you try taking rhe top off and shine a flashlight in there to check for something that looks wrong?? Without touching anything inside of course as you don't want to get shocked!

I myself would most probably get the XPA5 fixed and sell it, then buy a new one so that I would then have another 5 year warranty.
Also check those added banana posts that the channel was lower on. You could have a short. Even just rewire them again just to be sure they are good.

Put a purchase in for gen2 xpa5 a few hours ago. It will be a few weeks before they ship it out. For the time being, I took my trusty HK AVR630 and put it in direct mode. I might take your guys suggestion to get the old one fixed. I'm not even sure who would be able to fix it locally.

There will be a place near that local bands rent and purchase. That is where I would start. Did the whole amp fry or just 1 channel ?

I believe its just 1 channel...it turns on but it goes into protect mode and the LS channel red light blinks. I took the top off and it didn't seem to be any physical damage.

The saddest thing about my xpa p00ping is I had to use the money I set aside for a PSA V3600i

The saddest thing about my xpa p00ping is I had to use the money I set aside for a PSA V3600i :( Sorry for your troubles. One word your mention sums it UP! MONEY! If you have money to spend its no dilemma on what to do, if not, then you get on the forum to have people suggest to you what to do. I do not say this in a bad way...its human nature. Multi channel has never given me a problem. I have a twelve year old Outlaw 7700 7 channel amplifier using six of those channels and I am happy with my choice. I am still using it for HT while using two tube mono-blocks for 2channel. BOOMS suggestion is a choice and for him it makes sense. If I had to do it all over again for HT I would go with (in my configuration) 3monoblocks For my surrounds and a 3channel amplifier for my mains and center. Good luck with your decision and no matter what you decide it will be the right choice for YOU.

Not ONLY space, but sufficient POWER in the form of a couple dedicated 20 amp lines Most repair shops will WAIVE the diagnostic fee IF you go ahead and get it repaired at that time.
