Lonnie...here is one for the record then... I have 18 caps in 3 units of XPA-100 all budging with at least one let go so far... Yep, that is why we had our own caps made. The caps we use now are still rated at 105c but are less prone to drying out which is what happens and causes the failures. Lonnie

Well then Lonnie I hope you Dan and Joe will make the right move and replace all the 3 power supplies when your customer notifies you in due course of the warranty failure of at least one unit thus far. I would not expect any less from you guys. You always make right when you can.

Well it seems someone there told your client that you won't replace the power supply boards with the failing caps...so much for that!!! I'm disappointed.

Hi, My UMC-1 did the same thing, it's back in the box and now I'm wondering if I should put it in the dumpster. I won't buy any more Emotiva products, especially after I plugged my Adcom preamp back up and heard how much better it sounds!

Aww, come on. Don't be that way! Use that 40% card that Emo gave us and get some more gear! I did and love my XMC-1. Before that, I bought a UMC-200 and still using all three with wonderful results.
I just don't use the UMC-1's HDMI video section... it's not that great of course. The Coax/Toslink inputs to its DAC I use on a daily basis.
Look, with all of the hoops that Emo has to jump through to make a processor (HDMI specs that change with the weather and Surround formats that require all sorts of approvals), I don't see how they do it so well now. Sure, the UMC-1 was painful. But, what they've learned from that helped get them where they are now IMO.
I've met Dan, Kathy, Lonnie, Keith, Rory, and many others in the team... they're the REAL DEAL. They listen and respond. Can you just walk in the front door of Adcom and shake hands with the owner? ...then get a "howdy" and handshake from the chief engineer as he passes by? Not likely.

Anybody ever fix this problem? Add mY umc-1 to the list. It's been in a box for 2 years and i want to fix it so I can get rid of it. My xpa-5 is also flakey and seems to go into protection every 2 minutes. Not such a happy customer and I used to brag emotiva up to all my friends... and before everyone says it's time to buy new stuff let me just say that I'm not made of money and I just bought my maximum amount of wife allowed gear for the year.
Thanks,
crackt out,.

Why is it that a the net is full of old 20+ audio preamps that still work but apparently I should feel lucky that my umc-1 still works? I fairly dissapointed in that though being acceptable. 5 yrs and done....I guess I need to be ready for mine to die now.

If I was you, I'd have checked and replaced all electrolytic capacitors in the UMC's power supply. Replacing dried caps is much simpler than rebuilding the unit after a catastrophic failure (like $15K Lexicon MC-12 that blew up in my face). With a switching-mode power supply, capacitors should be replaced regularly. Older gear uses linear power supplies so it can live for decades, although the audio quality may deteriorate over time.

I like my UMC-1 but I only paid $100 for it. so unless I do it myself it might not be worth it. im running it in stereo so im really thinking of changing to maybe a usp1 anyhow.
