Trying to see if anyone else has experienced this and what was the solution. I recently decided to use the unused middle channel on my XPA-7 to bi-amp my center channel. My center is a 4ohm speaker but all of the other 6 speakers attached to the XPA-7 are 8ohm speakers. The XPA-7 has recently (tonight) started to shut down on me and show a channel fault. Is this amp not able to drive different impedance loads on each channel? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There shouldn't be a problem mixing speakers with different impedance, as long as each channel's impedance remains at or above 4 ohms nominal. Edit: I'd try removing what you just added to see if the problem goes away, then you've at least tracked the problem down to the new speaker or wiring.

Thanks - I didn't think this should cause an issue. I plan to do that in the AM as a trouble shoot. If the issue goes away I guess I run it by Emo to see if there's something wrong with my amp. Thanks again for the input.

Move the channels around and see if it happens to a different channel with the 4 ohms, or if that channel is problematic with the other loads. I'd also reexamine the bi-amp wiring. Try it with another amp as well.

Thanks, that was going to be my first trouble shoot (moving channels around) before resetting the rig back to pre biamping. On a whim I just used the old PC trouble shooting technique - reboot. I powered the XPA-7 down and unplugged it. I let it sit for a bit then plugged back in and turned it on. As of this morning it seems to be working fine again. After reading your post rbk123 I remembered that the channel fault I was getting last night didn't match the channel being used for the bi-amping any way. Really not sure what happens sometimes with this gear.

Hopefully it doesn't come back, but I'd expect that approach to work for a processor (or AVR) but not an amp. Keeping fingers crossed, though.

Agreed. I seem to recall having a similar experience some time ago with my XPR-5 though too. It could be a voltage thing with my house circuits too (not rich enough to have a dedicated circuit for these big amps). Thanks for the finger crossing!
