Ah, you're right. It should have been ( 8 * (8 + 1) ) / 2) - 1 == 35. N here is the number of different Slots Occupied, 0, 1, ..., 7, not the the number of slots. Thanks for catching my blunder. A classic off-by-one error.

Which leads to the next dumb question, which is about as important as the price of tea in Georgia. Since they are only making 32 options (yeah, only 32 options ), which of the 3 are getting knocked out? The 2 mono block units (RED), and which other one? The blue ones I've listed are all suspect, as I just don't see too many people running one channel strong and the rest weaker. 1 - 12 - 23 - 11 4 - 125 - 22 6 - 111 7 - 112 8 - 1229 - 222 10 - 1111 11 - 1112 12 - 1122 13 - 122214 - 2222 15 - 11111 16 - 11112 17 - 11122 18 - 11222 19 - 1222220 - 22222 21 - 111111 22 - 111112 23 - 111122 24 - 111222 25 - 112222 26 - 12222227 - 222222 28 - 1111111 29 - 1111112 30 - 1111122 31 - 1111222 32 - 1112222 33 - 1122222 34 - 122222235 - 2222222

Take the XPA Gen 3 power supply and put it and just one of the 150 watt Stereo blades in a compact chassis. A better sound quality 150 watt per channel amplifier than the BasX A-300. Some more muscle than the BasX. More speed. What do you think ?

I will take option #32 please Thanks Brian I assume that is for a 7.2.4 setup? That is what I am looking to use. I am curious though if I use two amps to accomplish the same thing. One with three double wide mono blades and one with Two stereo blades and 4 single wide mono blades (heights in the stereo blades and surrounds in the mono blades). I wonder how much better that would be.

Some more muscle than the BasX. More speed. What do you think ? That would be tempting. But so would several other such configurations. A regular singlewide in a small chassis. (unbalanced monoblock) Two singlewides in a small chassis. (XPA-2 compact) A doublewide in a small chassis. (Balanced monoblock) Two doublewides probably wouldn't fit in a small chassis. But I'm sure that other people could come up with their own ideas, on what custom modules they would like. The question becomes, what would be economical for Emotiva to produce.

Yes, much as I understand and generally approve of the "Amplifier Blade Approach" — after all, I own one of Emotiva's first efforts in this area, the MPS-1 — it leaves people who want to have either a Stereo or Monoblock Amplifier stuck with a huge chassis. I think there might be some interest in a smaller 2-slot chassis which could be used to offer a Stereo Single-Slot or a Monoblock Single or Double-Wide. For instance, I have a friend who only listens to stereo and doesn't do multi-channel audio. He wants Monoblocks but having two huge chassis like the current XPA Gen3s is kind of out of control for him. However, I don't know how much that would add to Emotiva's inventory costs.
That said, that's just for my stereo-loving friend. Personally, if the new Double-Wides are better than my current MPS-1, I'll probably buy a three-channel Double-Wide to go with the RMC-1 (or possibly XMC-2) and my front three Legacies.

Casey I have the exact same set-up you do on my front stage and have XPR-1s running the front three....it's pretty wicked . I can't take credit for being the first to do that, I can think of two other guys who ran the XPRs on Focus SE and Marquis......

I would love to run Monoblocks on my Front Left/Center/Right Legacies but I just don't have the physical room in my living room. But I think that if an XPA-3DW would be better than my MPS-1 channels that I could be convinced to go for that. I'm really hoping that Audioholics will do a thorough review of all the XPA Gen 3 Amplifiers. They did a review of the MPS-1 way back in May 2005, and I'm hoping that they'll be able to offer a comparison of the MPS-1 and XPA Gen 3s. Casey

I think the Gen 3 will be a great fit for your set-up.....I have one XPR in the cabinet and two on stands out front but that's not for everyone. With that said the XPA-3DW should be killer for your set-up. I have a XPA-6 now that I am going to send back to have two of the 300w blades removed and then have 3 stereo blades inserted, so to run my object speakers and have the 4 remaining channels to run my Studios-side and Phantoms-rear....

Bump.....I am hoping to get my XPA sent in so I can get the speakers installed. I was hoping to get this shipped in before EMOFEST and pick it up while I am there in a few weeks. From what I am being told, that may not be an option......we have been talking about this for over a year now....Come on Dan/Lonnie...hook me up!!!

Do you have a lot in common with the reviewers? Value the same things, musically? I'm afraid I find Audioholics reviews to be superficial and their 'helps' not very. The lab / measurements portion of their testing is usually pretty good.

Yeah, I've found them to be mostly helpful. Their reviews of the Emotiva DMC-1/MPS-1 were what got me to look at them originally, and the same is true of my Legacy Audio Focus SEs. I did do further research after reading their reviews and for the Focus SEs, I drove down to Los Angeles to audition them.
What I've liked about the Audioholics articles is that they rarely are drenched in the Snake Oil that one finds in most of the audio press. I also like the fact that they're not in love with their own writing to the effect of "telling stories about how they first ran into product {X}", etc. Their articles are mostly just straight-forward reviews and seem to be pretty even handed.
