A buddy of mine received his first exposure to Emotiva in the form of a Little Ego and Airmotiv 4s pair for Christmas; he's not interested in the technical portion of things but has 5,000 CDs+ and just wants things to work.
Every few days, the audio just stops (foobar or Google Play Music continues to play) and, only after a reboot, will things return to normal.
I'm wondering if anyone has any advice. I highly doubt the Little go is at fault.

Sounds like a USB driver issue. But to properly troubleshoot one will need to get dirty with the technical portion. That is part of using computer for audio vs a standalone player I'm afraid.

When I was using a thinkpad, I never had an issue but after the company switched to HP laptops (elitebooks) when I plug my little ego in, I get a notification about it saying " your usb device can perform faster if it is plugged into a hi-speed port". Not sure if that is the reason for the little ego not working and causing the audio to stop.

I plan to try to use a USB type c connector and see if that fixes the issues of performance. Has anyone tried to use a USB type C connector with their EGO's?

Apparently (I'm guessing here) the Little Ego is a genuine USB 3.0 device - and you have the DAC stuck into a 2.0 port.. Try moving it to a 3.0 port if one is clearly labeled. Your computer should have come with a user's manual which will clearly label the different USB port versions. Regardless - that message isn't an error message and it should let you play music without a hitch. My did anyway. I have a laptop with dual boot - Win 7 and Linux - it has two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 ports. I don't get any message in Linux - apparently it doesn't care - Win 7 shows that message briefly then discards the message and lets me view the thumb drive contents.

I have had my Big Ego for over a year with no problems. Last week Microsoft did an update and now my Ego is dead. Do I just need to download the driver again?

Yes, no, and sort of. DAC drivers frequently get deleted during an update and need to be reinstalled. If that's the case, they all you'd need to do is to reinstall the drivers.
HOWEVER, if you ended up with the absolute latest version of Windows 10 (Windows 10 Creator's Edition), then it should work WITHOUT DRIVERS. (What that really means is that Windows 10 CE now has UAC2 drivers, which is what the Ego DACs use, built in - so you don't need external drivers.) Note that this version isn't being offered as an update on all computers (some computers have some hardware components it doesn't work well with). You could try simply deleting the old drivers and see if Windows grabs the new ones on its own...... Or you could reinstall the drivers..... (You may also find that you'll be offered ANOTHER major Windows update in about a week - and this one brings you up to the CE version - which will then work without drivers.) 1) As far as I know the Ego DAcs are USB 2.0 devices. 2) It shouldn't matter anyway since ALL USB 3.0 devices are supposed to be backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports anyway. 3) The message is usually an error, and can safely be ignored. Hmm I beleive I have this same problem with my work laptop. When I was using a thinkpad, I never had an issue but after the company switched to HP laptops (elitebooks) when I plug my little ego in, I get a notification about it saying " your usb device can perform faster if it is plugged into a hi-speed port". I found an interesting 'problem' when I was comparing the Little Ego to the Behringer UCA202 that I've had for several years. When I would switch from one to the other something just didn't sound right. Not audio quality - they are very much the same. Maybe some slight differences but not good or bad - just slightly different. I couldn't figure it out until a couple of weeks ago when I was running a sound test. When I hit 'Left Speaker' the voice came out of the right speaker - and vise versa! Seems the Little Ego came wired backwards from the factory. I switched the analog inputs going into the Yamaha and all sounds as it should. As for the differences between the Behringer and the Little Ego? No clear distinction to be found by me. Both do a very credible job of DAC-ing! Hmm - new word?
