How does HDMI ARC work. I'm kind of confused how it works and how to set it up. Thanks in advance.

GIYF Edit: The link color doesn't show up easily. Please click on the word above. Thanks. I should have explained better. How do I make it work on the XMC-1? It says output 2 supports ARC. But it doesn't make sense to me that it is going from the output of the TV to the output of the receiver. Or maybe I'm reading it wrong.

Bookmarking this thread as I still haven't been able to make it work right on my XMC-1. The best bet would be to talk to someone at Emotiva. They're the best ones to get you working. If it still fails, then maybe someone in the Lounge might be able to give you some insight. I know that you have to have CEC turned on at both the XMC-1 and the TV (not all TVs label it as such; mine is called Bravia Link). When that's set up right, you'll be able to select ARC as an sound input when setting up the XMC-1 for sound for that input. The HDMI cable has to be plugged in to both the correct output on the XMC-1 and on the TV. After that, I'm not sure.

The XMC-1 outputs video and audio to the TV and the TV returns audio on the ARC.

Vizio has a different name for it and I'm sure Sony does too. I also read that the HDMI cable has to be connected with polarity in mind! Apparently it only works connected one way and not the other. I don't use ARC or CEC so can't add much more than that.

In order to get it to work, you need to set up your TV to output sound to the "receiver". In some cases you also need to enable CEC and edometimes also on the receiver.

The ARC on the XMC-1 works quite well though i did have to perform a few restarts to get it to take. I am using ouput 1 from the XMC to the input on my LG tv that is marked ARC. Every tv is different so read the manual or go through the setting and turn on anything related to ARC. For the XMC-1 you have to go into setup and enable ARC and when you want to hear something from you TV such as when you watch netflix you choose the ARC HDMI from the input list on the XMC-1.

No idea how to make it work, so I'm stuck with Optical for audio

I will say when i first set up ARC it took a bunch messing around and i really dont know wtf i did to get it working but i was into the tv setup and then the XMC setup and then a reboot from cold on the XMC and alot of messing around. All this and i have a decent grip on these sorts of thing but cec and arc are really cryptic with all manufacturers calling it what they want. My XMC was never really recognized by the tv but it does work. I had to redoo all this bs when i moved to my new house but since then works like a charm with my harmony remote. I think the manual says HDMI 2 but i am using HDMI 1 but i think they are just mirrored anyway. Keep trying i say, no harm in that.

Are you using a HDMI port on your TV that has ARC support enabled?

On my LG tv i turned on simplelink which is their name for cec in the general settings and in the sound settings i set the output to hdmi arc/optical. On the XMC-1 i went into setup / hdmi control and checked the box next to arc. Cold boot everything and you should be good to go.

My setup doesn't have an arc check box, just to enable cec ?

My setup doesn't have an arc check box, just to enable cec ? I'd try enabling CEC as some other gear requires it be turned on. Give it a go but you may need to power cycle your rig for it to take effect.
