That'll be the difference then, 3db of additional gain sounds a lot better in almost every way. He didn't mention that he was playing on the same volume setting. If that's the case the 3 db gain shouldn't make a large difference. I took "same volume setting" to mean that the volume knob was in the same place. Subsequent responses seem to indicate (to me anyway) that he didn't absolutely equalise the SPL's which is really the only way to compare power amps with different internal gain. Having owned an XPA-2 Gen 1 (used in concert with a XPA-3 Gen1), then changing to an XPA-5 Gen 1 and finally to a pair of XPA-1L's (which are all Gen 2) I have first hand experience with the difficulties in similar listening comparisons. Until the SPL's are equalised the XPA-1L's can sound quite different in comparison to their Gen 1 brothers. Cheers Gary

People TEND to prefer louder when doing such comparisons.
