So for only 4K movies watching purpose, there is no need to pay extra for the Oppo 203 because this Sony player is more than enough?

Thanks Stiehl11, and in the same price range this Sony is the best one out there now?

Thanks Stiehl11, and in the same price range this Sony is the best one out there now? I own both players, the UPH-X800 and the UDP-203, and yes, it is the best player at this price. I don’t agree that it compares to the Oppo (for many valid reasons), but that’s not the point of this thread. If all you want is a basic UHD Blu-ray player that offers superb performance with both 1080p HD and 4k UHD source material, then (even at its original price of $299) it’s a bargain. At the current sale prices, it’s a no-brainer...

I'm about to spring for the Oppo 203. I really liked the Sony for the price and build quality, but I'm looking for a specific feature: Dolby Vision. The only other players that do DV are Oppo, LG and Sharp. Samsung will not go DV and even their UHDTVs don't do DV.
Looks like I have an Oppo 93 and 103 that will be going on FleaBay next week...

it is on sale today at $149.99 but the model # is "UBP"-X800 instead of the title of this thread "UPH", is it the same model?

At the current sale prices, it’s a no-brainer... Here is my take on Oppo versus Sony. I've owned two Sony bluray players, an Oppo 103 and now a 203. The Sony players worked fine. They delivered the picture and sound as intended. They did not have the flexibility of inputs/outputs as the higher end Oppo's. The build quality is much better on the Oppo's. Firmware updates were pretty much non-existent on the Sony's and got worse the older the player got. Oppo keeps up with firmware updates and you can see the log of what was updated on their website. Their customer service is excellent. Resale value is much higher on the Oppo. I'm extremely happy with the Oppo brand and don't see going back for my main home theater setup. Having said that, this Sony is a bargain. For $150, I would not have any qualms buying it even if it only lasted a few years. No brainer for someone just wanting to try 4K. Actually a no brainer even if you use 4K all the time at that price.

As an owner of a LG oled, DV compatibility is a desirable feature. ...now someone explain to me why the PS4pro doesn't do 4K blurays again?

My player is going back tomorrow. The word is that it will not be getting a Dolby Vision update. I figured, I was going to keep it until I started doing a listening test between the OPPO and Sony and that’s not good since the player is used for mostly music listening. Going to save $150.00 plus tax.

All a listening test could reveal is the difference between the DAC in the Oppo and the DAC in the processor. Cheers Gary

Not in my experience anyway, I needed HDMI cables labelled HDMI 2, the ones that just said HDMI, didn't hack it, but one labelled HDMI 1.4 did. It also appears to be frame rate dependant, 4K @ 60 and 4K @ 50 seem more finicky than 4K @ 30. Cheers Gary

Should be, but isn’t. I have the 205 and use HDMI 2 which has an audio jitter reduction circuit. So, this may be why I’m hearing very bright splashy highs and less defined bass with the Sony versus the OPPO.

It depends on the DAC/processor/AVR you are using, for example the XMC-1 has asynchronous sample rate conversion (ASRC) between its DSP stages which eliminates jitter on its digital audio inputs. Cheers Gary

How is the Sony hooked up? And, what receiver/processor is doing the digital conversion?
