Yeah, didn't have time to peruse all that back and forth...
So plug the XPA-5 back into your smart outlet [on a triggered outlet] and with the trigger cable connected. That should get the two in sync powerwise.

From leonski: Sorry if I seem harsh. It wasn't clear to me that you knew series from parallel based on your statements. No worries I appreciate you trying to help. Any help from the dealer or fellow owner, or just a neighbor who has a device with trigger output? I have a Marantz SR 6011 that is a good bit more modern than the Onk and the 6011 has proper 12v out. I may swap the living room Marantz for the Mancave Onkyo/Emo. The Mancave is where I do most of my listening and when my wife is listening to the living room setup she can't tell any difference in the sound between a full Klipsch 5.1 Reference setup and the crappy 3" speakers that came with the TV.And yes, the human body is fairly high resistance. But also seems to have a SMALL amount of current associated with it.
I probably weigh a few more ounces than you do. We calorie challenged folk with a fat reserve are more resistant to passing electrical current than some of you skinny folk. I checked the resistance on my finger and there was no continuity. Fat fingers.
In all resistance scales, touching probe tips together gives zero or near zero measured result. Even when I worked in the field, the company's provided Fluke or Beckman meter would do similar stuff. My meter these days is functional but cheap. I should get a Fluke, or at least some kind of multi-meter not from the last century.I just looked at the Onkyo manual. I SEE the picture with the trigger connector but before I could find written reference, my Eyes Crossed! Wow. What a book. Is there some MODE where it'll do what you want? 'Direct' or some such? I see pages of mode / output choices for biamp and more. The 12v trigger is discussed on page 71 of 148 in the Onk 717 manual.
I'm a reader but there is a difference between knowledge and understanding. I have some understanding, what I lack is knowledge. That's why I post here.

I could have bought the XMC-1 for $200 when I got the XPA-5 gen 1 a few months ago. I was so determined to use the Onk's pre-outs I didn't use any common sense so I passed it by. The XMC-1 would have been a much better match.

I checked the resistance on my finger and there was no continuity. Fat fingers. Please try the experiment on the 20 MEG resistance scale and you WILL get a result. Note that the 'Electric Chair' works because people to conduct. Also? When working with higher voltages, many develop the habit of keeping the unused hand IN A POCKET. This prevents it touching something to complete a circuit path which includes the HEART. The heart can be stopped with a surprisingly small amount of current. I've personally drawn a 6" spark from a tesla coil. But it was VERY low current. And I rather doubt you are more overweight than I. www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~p616/safety/fatal_current.html
