The offer came to upgrade to the V3 HDMI 2.0b 4K HDCP 2.2 8X2 switching module. I know a little, like the 4K HDCP 2.2 part. My Samsung Plasma PN64F8500 is only a couple years old so I won't be buying a 4K anytime soon. The e-mail also states that any needed firmware would be updated and the unit would be given a total going over to make sure it is performing as intended. Knowing that my XMC-1 is only 5 months old and I'm not planning on owning a 4K television for a few years, Can anyone tell me a reason I should go ahead and do the upgrade now? Is there any gain to me now that can't wait until I want the 4K capability?
Thanks

If you purchased used or at a discounted price I would wait until I need the new board.

I would wonder if a version 4 board will become available in a couple of years with HDMI 2.1

My question is not about buying the upgrade but about whether or not I should do it now or wait until I have some use for the 4K. I get the upgrade at no cost as my unit is only 5 months old. The question is, are there benefits to the upgrade that I can utilize now or not much use sense I don't have a 4K display?

Always consider this an opportunity to ditch the small display and get a hdmi2.0a projector . Or keep the Sammy for fta and low rez formats and use the 2nd hdmi out for that nice e-shift JVC Its quite reasonable to use a few generations old JVC and still take advantage of the wider colour gamut the XMC1 can easily now pass . Ile stop spending your money now Great news Dan considering how much more of a sea change 2.1 is I imagine this wont be a self install due to complexity ;which is understandable . .

And if you think a 2.1 board will become available any time sooner than 2 years after it's mainstream, keep dreaming. I've been waiting for the V3 board only because I want my ATMOS. Well that board ain't coming til after the RMC is released, and even then, who knows. As far as ATMOS, there's not been a peep about when we can expect that. Just politician type, kick the can down the road tidbits.
I think it's embarrassing for a company to post pictures of products they're promising and upgrades they've promised for years on their website as if you'll be able to purchase them soon.
I was never in a hurry for ATMOS, until several months ago. I built my fiber optic star ceiling from scratch and added to ceiling speakers. I am now set for 7.1.4 and have been for near half a year. Still, no news on it's availability.
Can someone tell me why a products is touted as being upgradable, when upgrades aren't available for years and when so much effort is put into developing new products while putting promised upgrades on the back burner? I read somewhere on AVS forums or the like where a person said they talked to someone at Emotiva and they said the ATMOS upgrade would come after the release of the RMC-1. Does that really put it out passed fall or into 2019?
The reason for my ramble is this. Someone asks if a 2.1 board will become available in a couple years and Dan chimes in with "of course". Absolutely NOT and everyone knows it. If 2.1 becomes a thing lets say spring of 2019, we wouldn't see it until 2021 or later and I'm speaking from experience waiting for things, not being purposely negative.
As a footnote, no one loves their XMC-1 more than I do. It's been absolutely flawless and one of the most rock solid products I have ever purchased. However, the marketing and empty promises surrounding these products is way passed getting old. It's sad that a request for availability of a technology that isn't even developed yet gets a response from one of the owners yet we can't get a firm time frame on when upgrades promised years ago and even advertised in the products description will become available. And no, there is no info in any podcast that eludes to a time frame. Soon after X is developed using the same board, or as soon as we can get chips for X and go through testing, manufacture etc, is not an answer.

If not, you can keep it home as long as you are sticking with your existing video display. My XMC is 3 and a half years young and I'm in the same boat you are with no worries. When I'm ready for a new video screen, I will move towards the new boards.....In the meantime, I have Ultra HD up conversion going on multiple Bluray players. Picture is awesome and frankly, I don't see 4k as being worth it, but that's just me. Additionally, I go to the move house for Atmos, so that's TWO STRIKES. I'm a happy guy, and so is my ceiling. Unless they have a working board or more details on the exact hardware that would make it possible, it's going to be hard to give that kind of answer. The kind of bandwidth needed for 2.1 is insane and I'm not sure the specs are even finalized. What kind of processors are going to be needed for such a thing? What kind of internal connectors are required to make it compatible? I remember when the XMC-1 was announced as HDMI 2.0. That was a big deal. However a quick google of the HDMI specs listed came back as 1.4 . It took me all of four clicks and 15 seconds to find that out and I'm just a consumer! That hiccup (and the lack of atmos) meant that we are still here mess waiting on an all inputs HDMI 2 board and Atmos showing that it's not all that simple to upgrade to the latest tech. I believe one of the boards even required a complete replacement of the DSP chips.

The bottom line here is that all any of us can give you is an educated guess. With the last few "upgrades" to HDMI the determining factor tends to be when the silicon (the ICs) become available. As of this moment the actual specifications for HDMI 2.1 aren't actually even finished yet. (They're "officially published" - but there are still a lot of "TBDs" in there.) Sometime soon, things will settle down, and then we can start working on an HDMI 2.1 board. And, yes, a few big companies are already working on it, using prototype chips, built based on mostly fact - but with a little guesswork thrown in. (Remember when they were selling "HDMI ready" DVI TVs.... and, later, a lot of people found that a lot of them were only "sort of HDMI compatible"?) However, to be quite blunt, they can afford to spend $1 million designing a new board now, then another $1m next year to change it when the spec changes.... but we can't. So we'll be waiting a little longer, until we can get real chips that actually work according to the standard, and use our engineering resources efficiently to deliver a working product. I should also point out that this is the SECOND HDMI upgrade for the XMC-1. We've already offered one upgrade, which added support for one 4k input, but lacked support for HDR. Then, when HDR was released so close after 4k, we decided to stop making that first HDMI upgrade card, in favor of releasing the SECOND HDMI upgrade card sooner. And if you think a 2.1 board will become available any time sooner than 2 years after it's mainstream, keep dreaming. I've been waiting for the V3 board only because I want my ATMOS. The only real question is whether, by the time HDMI 2.1 is commonly available, the NEW version they're talking about will be called "HDMI 2.2" or "HDMI 3.0". Until then, nobody knows how quickly HDMI 2.1 will catch on (and if there will be a sort of half-step upgrade that will work with current hardware). If HDMI 2.1 catches on right away, then the silicon will be available in final form sooner, and we'll start working on it sooner. If it doesn't catch on (maybe because not many people really are willing to throw away the TV they bought this year quite so soon) then we may wait a little longer. And if you think a 2.1 board will become available any time sooner than 2 years after it's mainstream, keep dreaming. I've been waiting for the V3 board only because I want my ATMOS. Whatever it may be, it smells good! Thanks @keithl Its the way many feel about HDMI2.1 Nick I suspect . A few little tweaks like E-arc and gameing refresh rates don't exactly inspire to upgrade the whole system ; 2.0b may turn out backwards compatible with one or more of these anyway as mentioned. hdmi2.0b can handle the 4k frame rates we will have due to various bandwidth issues for a long time .. And of course it covers HDR in its iterations TMDS signalling wheve had for so long is being replaced by FRL though 2.1 is backwards compatible ' lets hope it works reliably ..

An analogy (that may or may not be accurate):
Japanese audio firms are like European cars. As soon as new technology is announced, it's implemented in European cars. The technology may not work well, and may have lots of bugs, but the European car makers have (generally) made the decision that they want to be at the bleeding technological edge ("the best - or nothing").
But the Japanese auto industry is willing to wait a model year or two before implementing new technology. They want to make sure that the tech is working with all the bugs gone before putting it on their cars, where reliability rather than "latest tech" is the main goal.
Now I was initially going to say that Emotiva is like the Japanese car industry, but the analogy breaks down some here. Emotiva can't afford to wait until tech is fully reliable (or else the tech would also probably be obsolete) - but they do have to wait until the technology is "mature" and "affordable" before implementing it.
Keith hit the nail on the head with R&D cost driving the upgrades. You can get the very latest tech on a $300 Japanese AVR before you can get it on an Emotiva flagship. But it will also SOUND like a $300 AVR instead of an Emotiva flagship.
So the bottom line is... Sometimes you just have to wait...

Am I correct in seeing the XMC-1 is not listed as available and built per order in 10-12 days? What happened to the backorder?
Taken from the XMC-1 page itself:
What’s New: Dolby Atmos & DTX-X With an optional upgrade, today’s XMC-1 features a replacement processor/decoder board that adds support for Dolby Atmos and DTS-X. The latest processor/decoder board replaces the original and adds support for Dolby Atmos (up to 7.2.4) and DTS-X. It repurposes Mix Outputs and Zone 2 Analog Outputs (making Zone 2 available via digital outputs).
This upgrade, which requires the latest (V3) HDMI board, is optional with a new XMC-1 for a total price of $2999 and available to current XMC-1 owners who have upgraded to HDMI V3 for $599 (including shipping). Factory installation is required (and included at no cost).
Earlier in the product description it states that the new 2.0b board should be ready in a few months. Seriously? That could mean 2-several. Now I'm sure it'll be toward the low end of that, but once that is ready, this product description is still one big lie. No mention of the DTS:Atmos upgrade availability, yet they claim users can upgrade. And calling it cutting edge is completely false. Cutting edge is something you're in the forefront of developing or making available, not something most other products have available while you have no timeline on bringing to market.
I may be in the minority in that I value up front honesty and transparency. If you know damn well a product or upgrade won't be available for a year or two or three, then admit it. To string people along with false advertising is just wrong. I'll be honest. As of now I have no need for 4K. I love my projector and whole setup. What I want most is the DTS:Atmos upgrade, and the product page implies that it's the V3 board holding that up, as the V3 board is necessary for it. Great, I'll gladly pay for and take both. But when is this DTS:Atmos upgrade coming. If it's seriously on the back burner until after the RMC-1, XMC-1 Gen3, yada yada is released, I'm not confident we'll see it before 2019 in which case I just may look elsewhere. However, if Emotiva would just simply state, yes, you orginal XMC-1 owners are taking a back seat to new products, as the same parts will be used in each product, I'd have more patience and respect. After all, killing 2-3 birds with one stone is common sense for a smaller company and helps to keep the prices of these awesome products affordable.
Just don't advertise cutting edge and make it sound like it's just around the corner back in 2016 when in fact it won't be for years.

The XMC-1 is back in stock and it's shipping within 10 - 12 business days with the V3 HDMI Board already installed at the factory.

Attachment Deleted[/quote][ The XMC-1 Gen 2 is back in stock and it's shipping in 10 days with the V3 HDMI Board installed from factory. I bought my XMC-1 back in May 2017 and I already got the email from Emotiva regarding the upgrade and decided to go with self installation kit. They told me that the self install kit will be shipped to me by May 1st. The page has been updated. It's shipping after May 1 with the HDMI V3 board. We are taking pre-orders now. There was an error on the page for a few hours that displayed the 10-12 days. That's the message we are using for our XPA amplifiers, and it was our mistake to have it on the XMC-1 page. So hopefully that clarifies everything! Maybe double check Enrico.
