So I came into some additional funds which has allowed me to make some modifications to my dedicated theater room. My current setup includes some new monoblocks which sound fantastic, backed by a great pre-amp. Unfortunately, the video is the very much the weakest link in my chain, and my Epson 7500UB was a very trusty partner, and took me through some good years. With that said, several bulb replacements later. The PQ just isn't there anymore. I'd like to see things pan out over the next year or two with HDR and native 4K projection before I dive in here. And I am not interested in pricey e-shift solutions in the interim. That led me to the Sony VPL-H45ES SXRD. Does anyone have any experience with this projector? From what I can tell it boasts some really good lumens, and contrast for the buck. I'm heavy on the gaming, so input lag seemed attractive, as did film content. thoughts? I see it's going for $1300 on Abes, which seem like a steal. My throw is about 13ft from a 110" 16:9 screen. Would I see a significant upgrade to my 2007 Epson 7500UB? Alternative suggestions welcome.

I've had a JVC RS46 for a couple years now. From what I recall, the Sony 45 and 55 were in the same class, but they traded black level for brightness. The latter being the better of the two because of a [dynamic] iris. I mostly watch movies in the theater so I went with the JVC and stepped the iris way down. I have full light control and don't need a ton of brightness. If you have some light to deal with, a Sony would be better (more lumens and stray light kills the JVC contrast advantage).
I upgraded from an Optoma HD71, which I believe is similar in era and class to your 7500UB. I'm more of an audio guy than a video guy, but I was fairly blown away at the time of the upgrade. Very happy to bid rid of rainbow effect and poor picture in dark scenes. The black level is awesome. I'll be sitting on the JVC until 4k becomes reasonable.
TLDR, if the lag time is low on the Sony, I think you'll be happy. Probably worth investigating if the 55 can be had for a similar price.

Check out Optoma, their new projectors can mimic 4k, not quite 4k, but very close, at a very reasonable price, I am thinking about one in the not too distant future, by the way, HDR technology was meant for tvs, so be careful with gimmicks in projectors. .....

At that price point I don’t think you can do any better.

Did lots of research over the weekend. The Vivitek HK-2288 looks like a strong contender for basically the same price as a 40/45 ES which is 1080P.
With the Sony, you're getting a known fantastic picture, manufacturer, and it's Sony. With the Vivitek, you're getting HDR/4K DLP/18Gbps ports. but apparently it's buggy according to AVSforum guys. When it works, it is incredible, but there are still a fair amount of HDR and HDMI handshake issues.

Always trade-offs. With DLP, make sure you aren't affected by RBE. The black levels are typically worse than LCOS/SXRD.
