I’d pass on the gen 1 amps. I'd like to know why as well. I have a gen 1 xpa-2 and love it. I’m not saying it hastily but out of experience. I had a gen1 XPA-5, also had a gen2 XPA-2. My gen1 XPA-5 was great for me as my first power amp. As time went on I felt the amp was a little noisy and felt it was more mid-fi especially with the highs. I thought the XPA-2 gen2 (so not really comparing apples to apples was definitely more refined. However, I sold the XPA-2 when I had a chance to get the XPR-2. Also the XPA-5 gen1 was the only Emotiva product where I needed to do a repair. It’s my opinion with my equipment. Other opinions may vary. Like someone

Personally I think I prefer the Gen 1 XPA amps.
The XPA-3 is a great amp, the XPA-3 was my first Emotiva purchase and I was very happy with it. I have since upgraded to an XPA-2 for fronts and XPA-5 for center and surrounds.
The XPA-3 is excellent for 2 channel music but the XPA-2 was definitely a nice upgrade. If you are definitely planing to go 2 channel only you may want to hold off and look for a nice used XPA-2 but if you really wish to have it now the XPA-3 definitely will work very well.
I have owned the XPA-3, XPA-5 and XPA-2 amps, the XPA-3 and XPA-5 were basically identical except for the added channels, the XPA-2 offers just a little nicer sound quality for 2 channel music, not extreme but for me it was definitely noticeable.

The XPA-2 I was thinking of was the gen 1 or 2, but your plan is still a good one.
