I'm considering upgrading my CD player to a CD-100. Is there a significant difference between the DACS in the CD-100 and the TA-100 (Cirrus Logic CS4398 vs Analog Devices AD1955)? From what I can gather, these two DACS seem to have pretty similar specs. The CD-100 would be replacing a Teac CDP-650, an inexpensive but not bad sounding CD player with Burr Brown PCM1791 DAC. In terms of the DACs, is the CS4398 at big step up from the PCM1791?

I have both.. I've listened with my AKG headphones routing music through each DAC.. I honestly cannot tell any difference... But my ears are 56 yrs old. Both great though

I haven't heard the CD-100. Honestly if I were in your shoes, I probably wouldn't bother.
BTW, I use a DC-1 DAC which I really like. But I found out recently that there is some really nice sound to be had from those old early 90's, late 80's Denon units. They were based on the old R2R ladder multibit DACs which surprisingly made some of the best sounding dacs - even now though not everybody shares that opinion.
I've been trying them out and the sound is different and to be honest, I prefer the sound over the DC-1 in quite a few ways. The one I use is the Denon DCD 660 and it uses a PCM 61 dac chip I believe providing 18 bits of resolution. You could get that or the DCD 695 which I believe uses dual PCM 61 DAC chips on ebay. The sound is similar to that of the Schiit Gungnir multibit. Fantastic deals on these units on ebay. You just got to get lucky and make sure you don't end up with a dud.

I've been using both (Toslink into the TA-100) but I haven't yet had enough time to sit down and do some critical listening, and decide which I like best. Most of my listening time tends to be while I'm cooking or bbq'ing. Unless the wife and kids are away, then I have some peace and can sit down and really get into my music. So far, I'm not hearing any drastic differences between the dacs.

The tricky part in any acquisition of a used laser anything player is that the laser pickup or any of its associated components are in good order. Trying to find spares for older players is not so easy or at all today. Caveat Emptor, buyer beware, but if the risk is reasonable to you, go for it. There is no risk buying new here, as you do get a warranty. Something to consider.
