I have been looking, for some time now, to add rear speakers to my setup. I currently run a 7.2 - front towers, center, full range bookshelves as front heights and bi-pole side surrounds; 2 x 15" sealed PSA subs, Yamaha receiver and all Emo amps.
I have long struggled with the idea of whether to use bipoles on the rear wall or direct radiators - the main concern I've had with adding bipoles on the rear is that there is an opening to a stairwell to the rear left, so with a bipole I assume that left side would "leak" up the stairwell. So, I have somewhat concluded that direct radiators are likely the way to go for this application.
The next task has been to find a rear speaker that has a relatively low profile; ideally I would add one of the possibles that mount flush to the rear wall, but I fear that the sound would then simply come from behind me and past me into the room.
Long story short, I am strongly looking at getting a pair of the SVS prime satellites, and mounting them with a set of low-profile swiveling brackets, so I can angle them more toward the MLP.
I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with these speakers, particularly in a rear surround usage; and/or any suggested alternatives (note, I am in Canada so availability and cost are limiting factors).
I have zeroed in on the SVS primes for a couple of reasons: 1) reported "neutral" sound which can blend with other brands (my main 5 are Boston, the bipole surrounds are a different brand); 2) not incredibly costly, although probably somewhat overpriced because you pay for the SVS brand name; 3) small scale.
Would appreciate any input.
