In 2008 what was later to become D&M took over and now Sound Fines owns both Marantz and McIntosh. Fine Sounds does NOT own Marantz. Marantz and Denon remain essentially the same company, owned by D&M. As I said earlier, Fine Sounds is now known as McIntosh Group, and remains an Italian company.

Hi David - That's a very good question. Since I'm not familiar with the Marantz, I couldn't say. My suspicion is that McIntosh would NOT use a competitor's rebranded component. To say for sure, one would need to compare the interior design & layout between the two. But since Sound United owns Marantz & the Harman Group owns McIntosh, I'd think that any commonalities are cosmetic only. Boom Harmon does not own McIntosh, Fine Sounds in Milan Italy does. Indeed, Fine Sounds now is calling itself the McIntosh Group. They also own Sonus Faber, Audio Research and a couple others. Harmon Group is no more, it's now a division of Samsung. D&M Global owns Denon, Marantz, Polk, Definitive Technology, Boston Acoustics and HEOS. They are all being controlled by Skynet....wait, is Emotiva Skynet? That would make Big Dan the Terminator...... Too much to keep current on.

A company named Sound United bough D&M which also owned McIntosh, Polk, DefTech, Sonus, Boston Acoustics, Heos, and whatever else. They sold McIntosh to the Italian co Sound Fines which also owns Sonus Faber, AR, Wadia, and Sumiko. Now Sound Fines has been bought by Quadravio, which renamed Sound Fines to the McIntosh Group. The common features between Marantz and McIntosh processors of course came during their common D&M ownership.

I really don't know but I assume because Fine Sounds (Sonus Faber) made them an offer they couldn't refuse. Last year a management buy-out happened at Fine when they changed their name to the McIntosh Group. Same company with the same management, but I suppose they thought that name sounded better. I think they were smart to capitalize on McIntosh's brand equity. McIntosh is way better known than Fine Sounds (in general population, not industry circles).

Bonzo, my go-to audio brand is and has been Marantz since the 1970's. They make some of the best sounding and finest operating gear on the planet. And compared to some competitors their pricing is amazingly low. McIntosh using Marantz technology is what I call "smart business." I can't say that about the AV7702 processor I owned for a bit, was the worst sounding piece of gear I have ever owned, my Sherbourn 7020C4 put it to shame, not saying as a whole for Marantz all their stuff is bad but that processor was lifelees sounding, brought me back to the days of using a low end Yamaha receiver. Just my experience of course YMMV Chad You need to step up your game and get a 8802a or 8805. Every company has a no so good product.

"...I also feel like Emotiva and the XMC-1 had a direct hand in helping us consumers have more options. I feel like without the XMC-1, Anthem and Marantz may have not stepped up their game at lower price points like/when they did, seemingly at the same time. Makes me wonder what they have in store for competition to the RMC-1. I guess we'll see, because they have the resources. Back in 2010, when I jumped into the fray, my interest in Emotiva was piqued by a need for an affordable power source to drive the Maggies that had become my latest obsession. I had been looking at cheap options like Crown and AudioSource but I wasn't convinced they would have the "oomph" that Maggies required . Then some one at MUG mentioned Emo, raved about 'em actually. I started checking them out and liked what I was finding. After a while, I decided to go with the UPA-2 which seemed to fit the bill for my needs. Lo and behold, as I was about to lay down my hard earned money 💰, I received an e-mail about a holiday sale, which prompted me to step up and take a swing at the XPA-2. Anyway, to make a long story even longer, IIRC, I think I read back then that Big Dan had been an engineer/designer for one of the large high end electronics manufacturers and realized he could build better equipment and sell for more reasonable prices. Thus, Emotiva was born... Or something like that. Thanks, Big Dan

The 8805 is $6000 CAD haha too rich for me, the AV7702 was even $2500 or so new and at that price I'd hope for better SQ sheesh, I'd go back to an XMC-1 or the Anthem AVM60 before another Marantz product Chad
