- No more dual RCA / XLR outputs for those who like to bi-amp, or for someone like klinemj who uses this to run his sub I did most certainly notice this! But, I think I could do what I am doing - with a slight twist. I'd just have to use a XLR y-splitter off the FL/FR and then do an XLR/RCA adapter off 1 branch of the "Y" for each channel (and then an RCA line goes from there to the switch that controls whether or not the sub gets a signal from the RCA line that goes from the switch to the sub). Conveniently, I do have some XLR/RCA adapters laying around. If not - a run to Parts Express would solve that! Mark

Conveniently, I do have some XLR/RCA adapters laying around. If not - a run to Parts Express would solve that! Mark I was wondering how long it would take for someone to chime in about that. Yep, you can most certainly add in a Y connection. That's how many analog lovers like vinyl folks get around the digital processing in their processors, which from what I've read, almost all do bass management in the digital domain anymore. Nobody wants that ADC DAC converstion in their vinyl chain. But they do want a subwoofer. But it still begs the question, why did Emotiva feel it was important enough to have both connections in the Gen 2 product, but now its not important? And to down play it going backwards by saying they'll include adaptors. Which unintentionally implies people like me are being obtuse or negative by even bringing it up. I'm not saying this issue is a deal breaker (like the lack of an analog record out or 7.1 input is for me), or that it will matter to anybody, but the fact is, it is less. When Emotiva puts on their spin on that its equal or better (since the center channel is now fully balanced), and they will because they are in the business of selling, I won't be buying it. Its not equal or better, its less than it was before. Simple.

Well, they did execute on quite a few upgrades on the XMC-1, Gen2. But at some point you really need to revise the basic chassis. The newer design may offer better controls, displays, and/or inter-chassis interconnects, etc. And, from Emotivaβs standpoint, making the XMC-1, Gen3 share as many elements as possible with the RMC-1, means they can significantly lower costs in development, maintenance, manufacturing, and support ... and that allows them to sell higher end products to us at lower costs while still maintaining a margin which allows the to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads. Casey I agree. But I guess that new price remains to be seen too. Rumor mill has it the Gen 3 will cost $3500. That's just what's been put up on this forum during various discussions. I'm NOT saying its thee price or it was even said by anyone at Emotiva. Now if they put the Gen 3 out for $2000, we will be having an entirely different conversation, and the more and less thing I've been saying will hold a lot less water. But if the price ends up being $3500, then I believe my statement holds a lot of merit.

...But it still begs the question, why did Emotiva feel it was important enough to have both connections in the Gen 2 product, but now its not important?... I'm guessing that with the addition of four more XLRs across the bottom of the rear panel there may simply have not been enough room to have both. Remember, it isn't just the space for the RCA connector, itself, but for the PCB and wiring that it requires. One suspects that they could only have one or the other, but not both, and made a choice based on their perception of what the consumer will gravitate towards.

While I have no inside knowledge on why they eliminated the RCA's, my guess is that it came down to a couple things: 1) fewer parts to go wrong and lower production cost...and hopefully they'll take those savings and put more $ where it counts even more. 2) XLR-only has a certain image of higher quality sound...and to some, image counts. I am likely wrong, but...that's my 2 cents. Mark

Hey Joe in mobile, if 5.1 is all you run then I would say go the way of used, save tons of cash that way as I have seen used XMC-1 Gen 2's sell anywhere from $1000 to $1500 US For the OP, this would be my recommendation as well.

To me the only main bummer on the G3 is the lack of a zone 3 output. I would guess that maybe 1% of users actually use all three zones, but with our outdoor setup I actually really do need the zone 3z

I am likely wrong, but...that's my 2 cents. Mark I think you guys are both right. They eliminated them for space, cost, less complicated, and image. There may even be more reasons. Fortunately, this issue has work arounds using various adaptors/splitters etc. Unfortunately, lack of a tape loop output or 7.1 inputs does not have any work around. I think the Zone out could be used for a record out, but hey there is only one this time, so that's less again. Just so all cards are out, the 8802a has the same issues in regards to outputs. But it has work arounds. Since it has 2 zone outputs, one can be used for the record out. And since it doesn't have any digital output, but since it has THREE HDMI outputs, one of those can be used with an audio extractor to yield a digital output. It does have 7.1. I've beaten this horse enough. Its not just an Emotiva thing. But unlike most others, since Emotiva does allow us this forum to voice our opinions, I'm going to do just that. Maybe one day they'll just get sick and tired of me pissing and moaning about inputs and just add them and be done. Bring back 7.1 input (even make it assignable so its either 7.1 or 4 stereo inputs), bring back at least 1 record out (the XSP-1 has it), bring back Zone 3, and I'd be happy as hell. Come on Emotiva, just do it. I triple dog dare ya. π Oh, and don't forget the S edition, with a silver center knob and silver trim, and change the stupid name. Just call it the XMC-3SV. π

I did not realize the website was the ten 2. Thanks for the heads up. I have directv w/4k, a 5.1 set-up and will use my turntable (it has a built in preamp) and i will use my iPod for music also. Is the version on the website with the upgrade something you would recommend. I will not be needing atmos, 5.1 is all i need. I will use xor cables to my amp. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Joe in Mobile That's how I use my XMC-1 Gen 1, 5.1 set up, Apple TV4K, Sony X800 4K BD payer and a 2K cable box to a Samsung Series 6 4K HDR panel (no Dolby Vision). Emotiva did the upgrade to the 4K HDMI HDCP board and then it was sent to me in Australia. I have no issues with any 2K or 4K content, 1K content has some artifacts but that's not unusual and I can easily avoid watching it. My turntable and ERC-3 CD payer are incorporated into my system via an XSP-1 all analogue pre amplifier for 2.1 stereo. Be aware that there is no direct turntable input into the XMC-1, you will need an XPS-1 Phono Preamp, which is the same phono preamp stage used in the XSP-1 (so it's a good one). Cheers Gary

It also lowers the WUF (wife usability factor). I know you'll tell me it doesn't, but your HDMI WAFs don't exist in my house in anyway, and they were killing you, so different strokes. It still doesn't get me 7.1 inputs or the Zone 3. Crap, beating the dead horse again. Sorry.

Just know the HDMI board is, as of today, not working perfectly for a lot of people. You might want to wait if you don't like glitches.

It's all good, we have different priorities For example I'll never own an Oppo and I hate their Sabre DAC implementation, so 7.1 inputs is something I would never use. They take up a lot of valuable rear panel real estate, so for me getting rid of them is a bonus. As it makes space for things that I will use. No WAF for 2.1 stereo required, on the rare occasions when the boss wants to listen to music she accesses the library using iTunes via the Apple TV4K and the XMC-1. Cheers Gary

...I hate their (Oppo) Sabre DAC implementation You and many others including myself. No matter what I tried, it produced glare. Not sure why they voiced it that way but it drove me out of the room.

If the pictures of the XMC-1 Gen 3 are accurate, it is exactly what I am looking for. I have an early XMC-1 Gen 1 where it wouldn't be worth paying for 1 or 2 board upgrades to get what I need (Atmos and high bandwidth 4K ready HDMI). I have sent Emotiva a message to see how you become a beta tester for the XMC-1 Gen 3 as I have a great setup and I am ready to go with ATMOS using Emotiva monoblocks for all 11 channels and will run all in balanced mode

Mark A caution: The simple hard-wired splitters and adapters mean that if you connect an RCA to one side of a splitter you may also be shorting the balanced output for both (i.e. both would be single-ended). May or may not matter in your system; it matters to me because my front subs are RCA-only and rears use XLR inputs because they are far away (sort of) and on a different circuit (ground loop with RCA). A splitter followed by transformer/balun or active converter to single-ended would work OK. Or a splitter using transformers or active devices that isolates the outputs from each other and the input would work. HTH - Don

I have a mac running Sierra 10.12.6 which apparently dirac live does not like. I see where the gen 2 does do 4k. With the upgrade is your recommendation to wait? Thanks.
