Mr. Nick hit the nail on the head. The *^$$%*&^(! jRiver program wanted to be told to output USB instead of HDMI. I don't understand why - It seems to me that the server program should just feed the digits to the host computer and let the computer specify where to send the audio output - but NOOOOOOO... JRiver wants its pound of flesh for EVERY change made.
But once I told jRiver to play nice with the USB output, everything works perfectly.
THANKS, Nick - Boom

THANKS, Nick - Boom I know you like small things so I thought I'd remind you of those nice PA-1 amps. Same size as a DC-1, fully balanced (ICE Class D) monoblock amps. $600 for a pair.

Actually, the XPA-2 seems to really like one of the pairs of speakers...

Now turn that volume down and enjoy the music! I’ve waisted so much time messing with JRiver and its “settings” that Roon seems like a dream boat. But I havenybeen swapping gear in and out like I usually do. You should be good to go now!

After checking the settings, I'd prepare a Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads, and you're gonna need 'bout ten quarts of anti-freeze...just in case the settings fix doesn't work. Mark It's all ball bearings nowadays!

jRiver, and many other audio player programs, can be configured to "send its output to the default system output device" or to override that setting. Many also override the system outputs entirely if you select special modes - like WASAPI mode in Windows.
This is useful, for example, if you want your music to play from your DAC, while the system beeps and boops still come from the speaker. (There might even be someone out there who wants jRiver to play from one DAC and Audirvana to play from a different one.)
