So, I currently have an XMC-1 with the new HDMI board factory installed, it is working good for me but, I had to upgrade nearly all of my HDMI cables for good results. I am set up with the amplifiers for 7.2.4 Atmos and will upgrade my XMC-1 once the RMC-1 and RMC-2 are available. I did check with Emotiva and found out I do have a 25% off upgrade benefit. I want fully balance so, that would apparently eliminate the XMC-2, leaving the RMC-1 or RMC-2. With the 25% discount, and selling the XMC-1, the difference between the RMC-1 and RMC-2 is not that great. Once the final specs are known, and if the processors in the RMC-2 is similar to the RMC-1 the decision gets tough. Is the massive upgrade path with the extra $900 between the RMC-1 and RMC-2 (post 25%)?

Most likely the RMC-2 will be everything you need for the next 5 years, but like you said for $900 more I think I would just get the RMC-1 and have some flexibility for it something awesome comes out in the next few years you can add it to the RMC-1.

I am thinking the eventual resale value down the road might be worth some of the $900 delta as well for the RMC-1 of RMC-2 even though it's an overkill for my current needs

The rest....I would shift my focus until the units are released before loosing sleep over the choice (good things come to those who wait) not to be cliche! Bill

I am thinking the eventual resale value down the road might be worth some of the $900 delta as well for the RMC-1 of RMC-2 even though it's an overkill for my current needs I would reconsider the XMC2 ; although its not quad differential balanced input to output like the RMC1 [and presumably the RMC2 ] it does have fully balanced xlr's for all its outputs unlike the soon to be converted XMC1 The main question is whether you are happy with 7.1.4 or 9.1.6 ? If you aren't using the later from the get go that would irritate me no end I would wait for a few more specifications like 405x5 said.

I don't see myself going beyond 7.2.4 and was also considering the XMC-2 however, the fully balanced and potentially more powerful processor are my main two concerns with the XMC-2. Brings up a qood question though on how much does fully balanced In/Out on all channels matter in a typical home theater, especially If the device connecting into the RMC or XMC is not fully balanced? Specs will certainly fill in the gaps, once published.

You have nailed the question ; theoretically fully balanced source to power amp you gain a few db's of signal to noise ratio but when your dacs are already 120db down your ears aren't going to pick the difference . Also should mention your L/R/C which have the majority of the surround for many multichannel codecs are fully balanced input to output ..Most of the opposition are single ended circuitry completely before the balanced conversion . Other factors like processing power as you point out will be necessary for things like Unison if needed ; I think the 2.0b hdmi board experience gained so far will help with implementations going forward and can see a hdmi 2.1 board being developed for the XMC2 ; the XMC1 compatibility wise - I wouldn't speculate ?

I’d consider too that the RMC-1 could end up closer to $2000 greater list price if you take advantage of it. That is, the prime advantage that we know, of an RMC-1 over a 2 are the expansion slots. So it follows, to justify an RMC-1 you should have some thought of expanding it. The only hint at prices on expansion are around $700-750 for the channel expansion module, which brings it to around $2000 more than the RMC-2. Now the phono preamp should be less, maybe $200-250, and who knows on the analog module? My point is that the RMC-1 wants to be upgraded, which raises its cost, the RMC-2 has everything most people will need. I don’t know about spending more on the 1 because of higher resale value, but the discount does make it more attractive. There’s also the logistical issue, some may not have room for a 4U processor. What would I do? I was hoping to have an RMC-1 in my system by now 🎶 the delay means I’ll have to wait until the end of ski season ⛷ so I now have plenty of time to watch it all unfold and think about it. 🤔 Edit: I have been trying to keep the comparison spreadsheet up to date, I have to say with the new prices they’re all pretty attractive.
