Been a huge fan of Emotiva for years. Was holding off a purchase until we got the right home configuration to take advantage of the equipment. Am finally at this stage.
Currently have a HSU Research 5.1 with HB1-MK2 front, center, surround and a VTF-15H sub. We're finishing our basement over the winter and I have the opportunity to add in ceiling (Dolby Atmos) speakers to my existing 5.1 setup. I'd really like to add 4 speakers for several reasons. First, this is the last time the ceiling will be open. Second, I know this is better vs 2 speaker Dolby Atmos and I sort of want to future proof the system.
My question, can a current MC-700 control a 5.1.4 setup or am I forced to look elsewhere? I'm not certain if the 4 ceiling speakers truly need 4 individual height connections or if I can/should splice two height lines together and setup that way. Frankly, I don't even know if the MC-700 supports Atmos at this time.
Any additional advice would be appreciated. We discussed adding more speakers throughout the basement/bar area to act as a zone 2 if we wanted to distribute ambient music or sound from another source (football) but I'm confident this means I would need additional sources or could possibly use my existing 5 channel receiver.
Thanks in advance.

The MC-700 does not support Atmos. Any number of receivers are available that will support 5.1.4. Accessories4less is always a good resource. Many receivers also have zone 2 capability that would suit your needs. Unfortunately Emotiva does not yet have an Atmos capable processor.

I bought a refurbished Denon x4400 from authorized dealer online for $799 and it has been great with my 5.3.4 setup. I had an MC700 and for home theater I have found it to be comparable enough without any quirks that nearly all Emotiva Processors have. Though for strictly 2 channel music listening the MC700 would beat it.

My only issue is source material since I do not yet have a 4K projector and most Atmos soundtracks only come with 4k content, Lame!

If you’re saying that the studios not re-releasing yet another Blu-Ray of major movies with an Atmos soundtrack is ‘lame’, I’d have to disagree, or at least understand that it probably doesn’t make sense. Since most ‘enthusiasts’ will eventually get a 4K display (even if because that’s all they can buy), and if you want Atmos, then it doesn’t make sense to buy HD Blu-rays. Buy UHD Blu-rays now with an Atmos soundtrack, many/most UHD players will downscale to 1080p, so you get at least Blu-Ray quality now w/Atmos, and you’re all set with 4K programming when you do get a new display.

Most of the 4K BD's I have bought come with a HD disk anyway as that has the "special features".
Cheers Gary

Cheers Gary Right, but if the goal was to have 1080p video with an Atmos soundtrack (I think that’s what stads77 was wanting), that usually wouldn’t work as the HD disk would typically have TrueHD or HDMA. Still though, buying the 4KBD (and having a downscaling player) is the solution.

I assume I need a UBD player and it would just recognize my display as non 4K but continue to decode the Atmos track. That makes sense.

That's how I had mine setup before I upgraded to a 4k projector. It was weird because I felt as though the 4K disc were very dark and lifeless compared to the blu-ray while on a 1080p tv. I think the UHD disc was trying to down-convert the HDR data from the disc and it made everything really dark. I'm sure I could have found it in the settings and made some adjustments though.

Yes, I’ve heard Oppo and Panasonic do a good job downscaling, but others probably do as well. I have a friend who’s started buying UHD Blu-rays to play on his Oppo UDP-203 and 1080p display, he says it works well, but I haven’t seen it yet. He plans on getting 4K when the right display and price suit his fancy, but is happy with his current display so in no hurry. In the mean time he can buy movies that have better sound now, no Atmos for him either but many BDs don’t have TrueHD/HDMA and Atmos disks do. Anyway, seems like a good plan to me because you’re buying ‘software’ that will improve as your system improves.
