I'm 100% positive this is easily available information, and this exact question has been answered many times over.
But I'm being lazy.π
I just bought BOTH during the close out sale.π
My question is, is there any real difference in sound quality, or is just more a matter of features? I'm basically wondering if one is more a pure computer headphone device, while the other can do that AND work on a main system device?
I'd like know before I actually open the boxes.
Thanks for any help you can offer. Just looking simple answers.
Bonzo.

I bought a Little Ego for the $49 closeout price as you did and I recall a lengthy thread on this subject started shortly after they were released. If memory serves, some thought the Big and Little sounded fairly similar. I had a Big Ego for a while and I thought it sounded almost as good as the XDA-2.
I think the Meridian Explorer trumps the Little Ego in spades. To my ears, the Meridian is richer, smoother and offers extremely clean highs.
I'm guessing the next compact DAC from Emotiva will be a big step up but I could not resist the $49.

I have 1 x Little Ego and 1 x Big Ego (since the day they were released), plus I have set up another one of each and I havenβt been able to discern any sound quality difference. Thatβs with headphones, powered and passive speakers.
Cheers Gary

Anyone get the Big Ego to work with your system?
The headphones work great and it sounds amazing but the optical output doesnβt seem to work.
I was going to buy both but didnβt see the need to buy more than 1 since this is a stopgap to play lossless until the RMC-2 comes then will be strictly a headphone DAC in my system.

I just bought the Big Ego during the close out sale. Does anyone know why Emotiva crossed out "made in USA" on both locations on the box and put a sticker over the "made in USA" on the unit itself? I sent an email to customer service last Friday but have not got a reply yet.

I sent an email to customer service last Friday but have not got a reply yet. Mine is the same. I'm thinking they either got dinged by some legal stuff (I could believe) or they had a change of heart to be more honest (which I doubt). They appear to no longer be saying "made in the USA", which is, in fact, not 100% accurate. For example, on the RMC-1 page, it now says "Designed and Assembled in the USA with Globally Sourced Components" which is much more accurate. So either good for them, or good for the legal system. I think them blacking out the stuff on the EGOs points to the latter. I doubt they would have gone through the effort if it wasn't something that could cost them money or legal battles.

Sadly I missed the closeout. Those sold quickly. 5 hrs after I received notification they were gone. I wonder what will replace them ?

Part of the reason for this thread is that I'm not sure I need them both. I only bought them both thinking the closeout price was a great deal, so why not. I could always sell one if I decide not to keep both. I made this thread before opening both, so I could potentially sell the one I don't want as "brand new unopened." Right now I'm thinking I'll open the Big Ego and sell the Little Ego, but I'm not 100% sure yet.

OK....
The main difference between the Little Ego and the Big Ego is the outputs. They both support the same sample rates, have the same filter choices, use the same drivers - when necessary, and have the same single mini-USB input.)
The Little Ego has a single analog output (the headphone output). (The quality on the headphone output is excellent - so there is no issue using it as a Line Output).
The Big Ego has two analog outputs (the headphone output and the line output). The Big Ego also has a Toslink (optical S/PDIF output).
The DAC chips used in the Big and Little Egos are very similar (one number difference in the model line). The DAC chip in the Big Ego is a few dB quieter, but they're both very quiet, so it really isn't a significant difference.
The headphone outputs on both go through a separate headphone amplifier chip, and an analog ladder network Volume control (unfortunately only jRiver that we know of uses that). The Line Output on the Big Ego has no Volume control and no headphone amp chip.... so it is theoretically slightly better.
The real difference is that, with a Big Ego, you can leave your stereo connected to the Line Output, and still plug and unplug headphones.
In addition, the Toslink output is switched - you choose between the analog or Toslink outputs. So, if you leave the Toslink output connected to your pre/pro, and leave your headphones connected to the headphone output, you can switch between them without unplugging anything.
(To me, they sound the same, and both sound quite good. )

Could be wrong, thought I remember that from a podcast way back.

I got a reply today from customer service in regards to my previous post. Kevin Kennally Subject: New customer message on November 23, 2018 at 04:04 PM NOV 26, 2018 | 10:13AM CST Janna Riggs replied: Hi Kevin, Thank you for your inquiry. As you noticed we no longer claim "Made in the USA" any more. Though our process/sourcing has not changed, that is for our US assembled product many of our circuit boards and metal work are still fabricated in the US, however the components and materials used to make those units did not originate in the USA. Because of this we can not claim Made in the USA. We can and are claiming Assembled in the USA with Globally Sourced Components.
