A lot of people really get into the vast amount of Meta Data that Roon offers. I occasionally look at it, but mostly I just use it to control things. As I've mentioned before, I was previously using the now Logitech-abandoned Squeeze Server and the writing was definitely o the wall for that. That was my biggest reason to shift to Roon. If you ignore the deep metadata (artist linking, production credits, reviews, cover art and a LOT more) Roon is still a remarkable control system, it's elegant, so I really agree. I tend to use search and album sort functions a lot but, lately, I've been using custom tags. For example, I have a "Mobile Fidelity Jazz" tag which is really useful since I used to collect those CDs and now have them ripped.

Yes, we should just buy KeithL an evaluation license so he can try it out for a few months ... :-) Casey

Roon imported a BUNCH of my albums as individual tracks (20 tracks = 20 "albums"). The online way to fix this involves selecting all 20 tracks and merging them. This worked once, but with the second try, Roon consolidated all but four tracks (now listed as a second album by the same name as the first one. Roon won't let me select both albums, so I can't merge them. Any ideas?

boomzilla My suggestion will likely seem ridiculous but I have found that problematic imported albums are often the result of poor metadata before going in. As we know, Roon does a stellar job finding the right metadata from all the different analysis they perform on a track but sometimes things don't work. I've had this happen a few times and I first moved the tracks/album out of the Roon library folder(s) and then threw them into an editing app ( I use Tag but it's Mac OS only). In my case, the tagging was so jacked up during the ripping process (likely from bad data the various rippers accessed) that each track had been tagged as it's own album. Long story short, I just made sure the metadata was in order by finding the album on All Music and the re-importing. Same album name, same artist, same album artist, same release year, same genre, etc. boomzilla - how do you have Roon set in terms of metadata? If memory serves, Roon can take control of any changes you make in the Roon UI permanently altering the metadata of a file vs the other way where the changes are only made to the Roon library DB but original tagging remains intact.

Thanks, Loop 7 - I can do what you suggest, and I'll check out Tag.app since I also use a Mac. Roon is currently set to its defaults. I'l check out the settings. Boom

boomzilla let me know if you want some screen captures/workflow steps demonstrating the way I tag these problematic imports.

boomzilla let me know if you want some screen captures/workflow steps demonstrating the way I tag these problematic imports. In fact, I'd LOVE to have some. You might even consider making a YouTube video so that others could benefit from your experience as well? In any case, thanks kindly. I don't want to impose on your time during the Holiday season (we're all extra busy), but when you get around to it, yes - Please!! Boomzilla

Just got my Sonore in the mail and connected to my pre/DAC. I'll be using an iPad mini to run the app for the Sonore.
Now to figure out the rest.... I'm completely new to streaming but really stoked about being able to stream to my 2ch rig.
Have Spotify account through family and will probably do full version of Tidal. Their appears to be 2 versions of Roon in the App store.
Which version is best?
Is there a better app for my situation? (streaming from Spotify not using a NAS or other storage for now)

Wow! simpleman68 : Nice Gear. Spotify? I'm not sure whether it is playing nice with the Rendu products yet... Last time I checked, it wasn't, but it has been a while... Roon : I do not know which two versions you're referring to, but since you're speaking of the App Store, it must be a version for an IOS device (your Ipad mini?), but that may not be the ideal place to start... For Roon, you will a need a server : a PC, Mac, or some dedicated device such as a sonic transporter, or even a Roon Nucleus (but the Roon Nucleus tends to be quite expensive. Personallly, I just use one of my Mac minis as my roon server, and that is what houses the Roon core... and it delivers in spades)... IOS devices are best used as Remotes or endpoints. The version of Roon required for the server (whether for Windows or MAC OSX) has to be downloaded from the Roon Downloads page itself. I do not think you will find that version in an App Store. Go here for more info : roonlabs.com/downloads.htmlThis video might help fill in some of the blanks, but if you have any specific questions, please fire them away... BTW congrats with the new gear, and may they provide you with years of even more audio nirvana than you're already familiar with This video is meant to play from the beginning, so if it starts somewhere in the middle, please drag it back to the starting point.

Thanks for the link. I've been a subscriber to Hans' channel for sometime now. The vid shed some light on most issues. I've been such a dinosaur with anything streaming related (other than Spotify through a cheapo blu tooth speaker)
I am going to use the iPad mini (about 1 yr old) as a control device.
Question is can I also use it as a core? It is not used for anything other than to control my Legacy Wavelet and has no other files on it or tasks.
If it doesn't have enough horsepower to run as a core should I use my desktop computer, a laptop? Both are about 2 yrs old and running Intel Ci7 processors with 16GB of DDR3.
Thanks for any help with these questions that probably sound borderline special needs. Scott

MQA sur Tidal is good start, but for a serious MQA spreadsheet try this Meridian MQA link, www.meridianunplugged.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=268318. Granted there are numerous duplicates, typically MQA encodes at different resolutions, and some albums on the list are not available in the USA, but 13,000+ MQA recordings is quite a bit of music. Yah, I’m a Roon/Tidal/MQA fan. I think it’s a brilliant concept. Roon also allows me to include my expensive HDTracks library in the seamless mix of listening options. Roon plus Tidal has expanded my music library to infinity and beyond. I feel like Buzz Lightyear. Regarding operating issues with iPhones, my thinking is you may need a more capable PC or Mac as your core. I use numerous PC and apple end points. Of course, each endpoint can also act as a remote. My household Roon remotes include 2 iPhones an iPad, a Windows Surface Pro and an HP notebook. Each remote can control either the media room or living room zone (2 different DAC’s accessing the same core PC), or itself acting as an endpoint. Add to that a high-quality endpoint can be as inexpensive as a networked $50 Raspberry Pi with the appropriate HAT or USB DAC. I’m an old, retired, lifelong Hi Fi enthusiast, but not all that technically adept, yet my Roon system has been virtually trouble free for this past year.

I may want to set up some sort of NAS in the future but for now I am only streaming to my 2 ch rig and eventually to the outdoor entertaining area. For now I will just use Tidal and Spotify provided they work.

I was looking into using my Surface Pro 3 as a core and control and the folks at Roon said I could. The Surface would be via wifi. I ended up not using it, but they said I could. Re. the iPad mini, I don't know how its computing compares to the Surface Pro 3, so I can't elaborate. It would be worth asking Roon support. But...if you have a desktop that is hardwired to use as the core, I'd opt for that if I were you. Serving as the core is a piece of cake for a typical desktop. And, once you have it set up as core, you don't need to do anything other than leave it on as the core for all other Roon ready devices to see and use. Mark

PS...I have my core on a desktop within my house. And, I set it up such that every time it re-starts, Roon also starts up. So...if my PC updates itself or power goes out, Roon Core re-starts and the rest of my system can see and use it.

The ipad mini will be excellent as a controller, but for a core you will need a dedicated computer or laptop. The two you describe will be ordinarily more than enough for housing the core, except that they sound like computers that you use quite frequently, and that does not make them ideal... Ideally, you would rather want a computer or laptop that serves as the core and does nothing or next to nothing else. The good news is that it does not have to be a very recent model, or overspec'ed with mega processing or RAM powers to do the job adequately. If you have an older computer from say 6-8 years ago that you're not actively using anymore or too frequently, one with about 4 gb of ram, and another 60-100gb of free storage space, that would make an excellent roon core home. Some people actually like to stash the computer with the roon core away from the listening area, to keep any related fan noise from interfering with the music. For that reason of noise interference, the farther away you can keep it from the components or the listening area, the better it will be (unless noise interference of any kind does not pose any problem) The point is that it only needs to be connected to the network (preferably by an ethernet connection, but wireless will also work fine, in most cases), and be capable of being left on most of the time, if not all the time. Once that is assured, it will smoothly serve all the endpoints in your house that are also on the network.

It was completely cleaned out when I transferred all data off to the current desktop. Easy to do ethernet cable as the router is only 6' away. The old tower is not an SS drive. A worthy upgrade to do? Scott

simpleman68, putting a Solid State Drive on an old system is almost always a win. You can get a reasonably cheap one and it'll make the old system seem like it's a new system. And if you want to go a little high end, you can get a Samsung 850 Pro 256GB SATA for ~$200. It's the fastest, most reliable SATA out there. Casey
