For what it's worth, I moved from a Denon (and before that, a Marantz) to the Emotiva XMC-1. Best move in audio I ever made. Yes, but as said before, those were not the 8802a, which is on the same playing field as the XMC-1 and AVM-60. Its the best bang for the buck on the planet right now for 7.2.4. It lacks little, does a ton more bells and whistles, and supposedly sounds 99% as good. But it doesn't come with blue lights and a bottomless kool-aid glass.

My 4520 I only use as a pre amp, I use my 3 external Emotiva amps, I have two 5 channel and one 2 channel amp that I use to run my 11.1 system. I will probably go Atmos but I am still going back and fourth on this. Have the same 4520, love it, not jumping to atmos yet... I love mine but I hate that it is not HDCP 2.2 compliant.

I have looked at the XMC-1 but I am going to at least a 7.2.4 theater and the XMC does not support that. But it will. It does? I read the owners manual and did not see that. I am also going to go Atmos.

That’s the sweet spot. I do go back to 2 channel when I listen to music. Depending on what I am listening to, I will listen to it in concert or rock arena mode.
