Hi I'm new to the Emotiva forum and love their components. I own PT-100 Preamp/DAC, a A-100 Class A/B Amp/Headphone amp and a ERC-3 that all work great.
I just had my A-100 serviced because the DC-Offset was not functioning properly. Emotivas Techs fixed the issue and shipped it back in only 7 days. It now works like new again and I have been burring it in so this will not happen again.
Because I have two main headphone amps and a hafler DH-500 that has been upgraded I usually only use my A-100 as a high output headphone amp and have the Pre-out split with Y adapters to allow me to run either my A-100 as a headphone amp or my completely upgraded Little Dot MK II with matched super power tubes and a few different matched pairs of driver tubes to roll as I see fit. The Little Dot MK II can be up-graded to sound better than jsut about any other all tube headphone amp I have ever tried and I have tried a bunch, The Schiit's Audio mangi 2 and the Asgard II were both o.k. headphone amps but could not match the performance of the A-100 set in high output mode.
I use Sennheiser HD-650's about 75% of the time since I live in a apartment and I don't want the cops called on me or to be rude to the nice couple that lives below me.
I was wondering if anyone here knows if the A-100's gain control can be set at full output without clipping the Amp? Like I stated I'm currently running my A-100 as both a main amp and as a high output headphone amp that puts out 1.3 watts into a 300 Ohm load or 1,300mw. So I have a white press on decal that shows really where the gain control is set so I don't blow up my expensive headphones.
I just need to know if I can put the gain of the A-100 to full output when it's used as a 50 watt per channel main amp into 8 Ohms? I have Definitive Studio Monitor 450's which are large bookshelf speakers with a sealed enclosure. They have a main 6 1/2" mid bass driver a 1" aluminum dome tweeter and a 10" passive radiator that really helps them get them to about 35hz 4 without a powered sub. The specs claim my 450' can get down to 26 HZ but I know that is not accurate. They may actually get that low during testing but the low bass can't play very loud if indeed they do get that low. The 10" passive radiator really helps with bass performance but being realistic I would say they can get down to 40 hz
So can I safely put my A-100 at full output without clipping the amp with my 450's that are rated at 90 DB S.P.L.? Thanks for your time my fellow Emotiva lovers. Sincerely, Steve L.
P.S.: I had both my A-100 serviced and my ERC-3 needed a new transport when it failed about 10 days ago. Emotiva was able to repair everything within less than 7 business days and they include a extra 6 month warranty on top of whatever you have left on any component. Great company and great people to deal with.
