Hello,
Both of my Stealth 8s will produce a hiss from the tweeters when powered on and not receiving signal. It's not audible across the room, but it's very noticeable when I am about a foot away. I have the gain all the way down. The hiss is present even without signal cables connected. They have done this in my previous residency and my current.
I just installed a CMX-2 to try to alleviate the issue, but it had zero effect.
Are they defective, or is there something I can do?
Thanks

Why is it normal for them to produce a hiss?

Why is it normal for them to produce a hiss? There are big roaches in Asia that hiss, now that is normal...

It may be within normal limits at 1 foot. Try plugging it somewhere else in the house and see if you have a similar issue. Also is it a hiss or is it a oscillating buzz/hum?

My 6s do the same thing, if I'm right close there is a slight hiss, from my seating I can't hear anything and doesn't affect sound at all.

I've tried it on two different outlets on different circuits in my current house. Previous house I only ever tried it on one outlet/circuit. I guess I could try recording the sound and post it here.

It’s normal for powered monitors to do this. The proximity of the drivers to the amp is one of the main causes.

A lot has to do with the way the drivers are shielded, plus the short runs esp from very powerful amps create induction issues that can introduce noise. Plus, you have volume pots and other adjacent electronics built into the amps attached to power monitors that also create issues. You can work around these things as a designer, but you have to go into the design with that intent. It adds to the cost of the design to nail down all of these poblems which is why most powered monitors hiss a little bit. I’m sure if you dropped 12 grand on a pair of Barefoot Monitors I suspect these would be dead quiet, because they are way way over engineered.

I was thinking about getting a set of Stealth 8's to replace my current monitors in my DJ setup, but this hiss issue has me concerned. My current JBL monitors don't hiss at all. They're used as near-field. Hmmm... what to do

Just to be clear here..... ALL amplifiers produce some amount of hiss... In fact, all active audio electronics have a noise floor, which is usually mostly hiss.
However..... Some things produce more hiss than others... And some speakers are more efficient than others... And different rooms are more or less reflective than others (which makes noise more audible)... And different rooms also have different levels of background noise (which tends to mask noise produced by your audio equipment)...
When the Stealth 8 is powered on, you are going to hear some slight amount of hiss, if you listen closely enough. (And this is true of any speaker connected to an amplifier that is turned on.)
And, yes, things like line noise can also produce audible noise, which will raise this noise floor. (I would say the Stealth 8's are pretty quiet.)

If they are powered, and they are on, then they produce some amount of hiss. However, depending on the efficiency of their tweeters, and your room, you probably just don't notice it. Odds are that, if you don't notice it with the ones you have, you won't notice it with the Stealth 8's either.
Some issues, like line noise, can increase the amount of background noise on some units.... But it is always there at some low level.... And it is quite normal....

I really appreciate the detailed information. This cleared things up for me. Like you stated, I probably wouldn't notice it compared to others after all the years of damage to my hearing being a club DJ.
Looks like they sold out anyway........
Thanks again!
