I have been watching the boards and the RMC and Atmos conversations as to what direction I want to move forward with over the next 18 months. I have been quite happy with my XMC-1 and 7.2 surround sound. In watching the RMC-1 conversation and seeing what complications moving past 7.2 seems to bring, I am leaning towards the following two upgrades first and waiting on the RMC-2 for maybe a year after it's release. First, upgrade my projector from my Sony 1080P projector (Pretty good picture) to a Sony 4K like a VPL-VW295ES then, upgrade my Axiom M-80 main speakers to a pair of Tekton Double Impacts.
Once the RMC-2 is out and stable for some time, I will make the jump to 7/2/4 Atmos. I have the amplifiers already but, would need the four height speakers and RMC-2 (maybe tax return 2020 time)
Another possible path is upgrade the projector / speakers and just stick with 7.2 and forget moving to 7.2.4 completely

If you are ready for Atmos now (heights installed etc) there are plenty of available options available in the AVR market at 7.2.4 Some are pretty inexpensive if you really want to get your feet wet in that area.

I do not have the speakers yet and would need to add the 4 height speakers. I do have the amplifiers though. Also curious if they ever provide the Atmos upgrade for the XMC-1 and am betting they force a move to the RMC-2 in order to get the Atmos capability
For those on the board that made the jump from 7.2 to 7.2.4, was it worth the cost?

I’m pretty sure they’ll allow atmos on the xmc2. Not only the rmc platforms. My move to atmos was 100% worth the cost. I’m completely satisfied with its sound even from non-atmos movies. The upmixers do a wonderful job. Jmo, others will most likely vary.

I have a 7.2.4 system with a Sony HW40ES projector and a Marantz AV7702, which has the limitation of no DTS-X, but I would not go back to a single plane sound system. I think if sound quality is important to you, and you already have an XCM-1, I would wait for the promised Atmos upgrade board.

I have the same projector and love it, great image. Glad to hear it’s worth adding the heights and really wish there was a bit more guidance on the XMC-1 Atmos upgrade, maybe early 2019 for some news?
Have you looked into upgrading to a Sony 4K Projectir?

Have you looked into upgrading to a Sony 4K Projectir? I would love to do so. I love my HW40ES so much that I would be afraid to take a chance on another brand. I especially would want something that would mount in the exact same place on my ceiling with no changes.

I recently upgraded from my Sony HW40ES to the VPL-385ES (tested out a JVC in between the two but ended up selling it) and I can't say enough good things about the VPL-385ES. It is everything I liked about the HW40ES but 10 times better. Of course 4k content is awesome, but honestly my 1080p stuff looks so much better. The upgrade in contrast was amazing, as I now feel as though the HW40ES was washed out compared to the 385. The mounting location was the same for both projectors.

I know they are working on it, but with the RMC-1 and the other new processors in the queue I can't see the Atmos board being here very quickly. At the end of the day its a $500 item that is going to take them a ton of R&D to make. I just don't know how much profit is in an item like that. That being said I am sure they will come out with it at some point because the selling point of the XMC (and RMC) line is being somewhat "future proof".

I thought it was also a component of the XMC2, not a one off. Similar to the HDMI 2.0 board. No?

No? -tm The difference between the XMC-1 and XMC-2 ATMOS boards will likely be that the height channels for the XMC-2 will be "baked in" in terms of where they'll be at in the chassis. The XMC-1 chassis never was designed for the height channels so current outputs will have to be reconfigured. I agree, though, that several of the parts will be shared between the two boards.

That’s more about how/where the board is connected, not the board itself, which may otherwise be exactly the same. Or the board layout could be different but using the same components. From what we have seen with the XMC-1 4K board and the RMC-1 the time consuming part is the software programming. As Lonnie posted, getting the Atmos board to “talk” to the rest of the XMC-1 is the bit that they are working on currently to achieve a Q1 release. Cheers Gary
