No news yet? ? The amp arrived last Monday, the 21st. I took off the next morning and was gone most of the week. Upon return I have been A) very busy, and B) very sick for a couple days. But I have been able to listen to the amp with the HD650's and I am very pleased. Haven't even thought about putting in the jumpers. It's funny that I just now dropped in and you had just posted. I think that happened once before. Bottom line ... I am a happy camper. Now the question is .... what headphones should I next get? Bwaaa-ha-ha-ha-haa!

Well, happy camper, I suppose your last one is a joke. If, however, I were in the market for headphones, I would look at Beyerdynamic, because they have a broad range, compatible with any budget, including mine. Back to the original topic. I suggest an alternative method: - select a source which you know has an average level - set the volume to 0 on the A-100 - set the volume on the PT-100 at 12 o'clock - slowly raise the volume on the A-100 until you are comfortable You will then have a broad range of adjustment for sources of varied levels. Cheers, J-J

Can anyone explain why I shouldn't max out the A-100 and control the volume with the PT-100 while using headphones?

Of course, you can. But because the A-100 has a high input sensitivity (600 mV), you won't be able to use the full travel of the PT -100 volume control.
