Im curious how people are liking the picture quality on the XMC1 with v3 video board. How do you think it compares to: a) connecting your source(s) directly to your display, or b) to the XMC with the old video board, or c) another AVR or processor?
I can't say with any certainty as I haven't done any real testing yet, but I feel like Im getting an overall reduction in picture quality relative to a and (I think) b above. To me it kind of looks like the picture on the UMC1 which was notoriously bad in terms of PQ. Im curious if anyone else is noticing this or if Im the exception.

I voted no difference, which is true, I can detect no difference in picture quality direct or via the XMC-1. But that’s not the whole story. Installing the XMC-1 and doing the usual HDMI debugging forced me to change settings in the source devices and the TV. So while I was doing that I also optimised the settings. As a result the picture quality after the XMC-1 was installed is noticeably superior than before it.
Cheers Gary

To Gary's point, perhaps there are some settings being negotiated that are resulting in a downgrade. Maybe he can point you to some things to look at.

To Gary's point, perhaps there are some settings being negotiated that are resulting in a downgrade. Maybe he can point you to some things to look at. Each piece of the 4K video jigsaw puzzle has to be set to work with every other piece. In my case the Apple TV4K settings have multiple combinations and they had to be selected to optimise the picture on the Samsung TV. Quite likely different settings to another brand of TV. Likewise the Samsung TV had to have its set up changed from the defaults in a number of areas. The Sony BD player has much fewer settings to select from and I really only changed the way It handled different audio sources, no real video changes. My experience has been that 4K is especially fussy on HDMI cabling, and going direct from source to TV means one less HDMI cable, less total cable length and 2 less connections. So if there is a real world video difference then that's where I'd start looking. FWIW my ATV4K is set to "4KHDR 60 hz", chroma "4.2.2" with Match Range and Match Rate both "on". Cheers Gary

Looks the same to me. I happened to switch cables around debugging an issue and saw no difference between a direct connection from a Tivo Bolt, or the connection through the XMC-1 (when it worked :-))

Yeah, its looking pretty definitive that I am in fact the exception here. I figure it could just be my imagination, there could actually be something wrong with my XMC1, or it could be a setting issue. The latter is probably the most likely. This is good news to me, it means if I can get the reliability dialed in the V3 board may still be a keeper. Thanks for the votes. For clarification Im having issues with all resolutions, not just 4K and HDR.

The UMC had a video processor. The XMC is just a switch with no processing of its own.

The UMC had a video processor. The XMC is just a switch with no processing of its own. Yeah I get that... I didn't say it made sense. The UMC had issues even in "passthrough" though which didn't really made sense either. Plus, the fact that the the xmc was causing “banding” proves it can have an effect on the video going through it. Anyways, I did some testing yesterday comparing the video with and without the XMC in the chain and switching back and fourth I couldn't see any difference. The bad picture I was noticing appears to be a Tivo problem, it looks bad either way! Hopefully just a cable issue as I noticed it around the time I installed a new HDMI cable. I agree with everyone else, Im not seeing any picture degradation with the XMC in the video chain (now that the banding issue has been fixed). I stand corrected.

I voted that the picture looks the same.

Ok, Im really curious, why is this thread stickied at the top of this forum and my other posts are stuck several pages back? What happened to sorting by most recent post date? (before I posted this it was still up at the top and it hadn't been posted in for days)

(before I posted this it was still up at the top and it hadn't been posted in for days) It's a ProBoards issue. For some unknown reason, all threads created on, or around, December 31st are pinned as "Announcements" (as seen by the exclamation symbol in the thread icon) and float to the top of every board in this forum. Our mods are aware of this, but can do nothing about it. The problem has been submitted to ProBoards, but there's obviously been no resolution yet. Hope one comes soon...
