I donβt know π€ perhaps itβs just me...
In the year 2000 after I realized βThe Matrixβ and other of the new DVDs π (remember those round silver things with the hole in the middle)? Would soon send my woofers to an early grave unless I did something.
So, I got busy and In January of 2001, I completed my first iteration of a hybrid home theater π system. Meaning that the foundation being....above all a Steinway needed to continue to sound as accurate as possible and every thing else would follow suit and it worked out beautifully.
After 10 years, the writing was on the wall for my aging processor with HDMI taking over and all the rest. By 2014, I was one of the early adopters of The XMC which remains in my opinion, the finest AV processor you can get your hands on, unless youβre hell bent on punching holes in the ceiling until it falls down.
Things are now getting SOOOO complicated with all of these object based audio configurations. And all these new processors coming and going, seemingly before they ever REALLY get off the ground?
.....begs the question and by the way, my heart goes out to all these companies like Emotiva that find themselves in an impossible situation at times.
So.....is it still fun?
Bill

Yes, yes and yes.
Technology, the standards people. 1080i, 1080P, 4k, 8k, etc...
I divested myself of high end HT years ago. I have a nice little 3.1 setup amd a modest HT Receiver.
I may someday buy a "better" receiver or a low level pre/pro. But nothing over $1,200/$1,300 lbs.
Now my 2channel setup is excellent.

My setup is a simple 2.0/5.2 arraignment. It works for me. Mostly I use the 2.0 with the Polk mains and the Yamaha integrated amp. I un-digitize my music with a Cambridge DAC Magic 100. Thats about as high tech as it gets here. My Yamaha 2070 is capable of 5.2.4 but I don't see me doing that any time soon. Go ahead, chase the 'latest and greatest' if you must. I'm static, and love the sound I have. All this new crap does is enrich those that are pushing the 'latest and greatest'. A lot of you guys remind me of a kid in a candy store. Just gotta have it all! I'll never go with object based audio.

More channels, more troubles. Fortunately, for me, I'm not a movie buff, so I'm glad I abandoned multi channel when 5.1 devolved, IMO, to 8/9 channels, back when Emo gear was still affordable.πππ I'm satisfied & tickled too - I LOVE my simple, unsophisticated yet effective stereo rig. It's a good thing too, 'coz If I didn't, I'd be s.o.l.π±π©π² I don't have the scratch π°for the kind of kit atmos and whatever flavour of the month tech is going to hit the market next.

We are in a golden age of technology that started when dvd accelerated the digital video medium like nothing before it. We are getting closer towards outstanding displays, huge cinema screens and audio with a height dimension. Right now with high speed processors and TVs becoming more affordable, itβs caused what is understandably serious confusion with rapidly changing standards. But it will settle down in a generation or so. The market is looking for a new standard that delivers something as compelling to drive universal adoption. Itβs not here yet. But it will be.
I see massive screens. The eventual return of glasses free 3D and improved standards for consumer sound. Already some sound bars are light years ahead of old tv speakers. It can only get better

Geezus. How many members here are actually under 40 ?? I totally feel like a minority. Unfortunately, the reality is, audiophilism(?) is expensive and best suited for those who are either "well off", or absolutely love all things audio and willing to sacrifice in other spots. That's pretty much two massive strikes against all generations younger than baby boomers. I'm pushin 40 myself, but grew up with parents turning over every penny twice before spending it. I can't seem to break those habits now even though I can afford it now. I always feel guilty dropping money on audio (and pleasure/sports/hobbies in general).

Imho, you can keep it simple,.. I have all the surround I need in a 7.2 dedicated HT at home, mainly for the family & friends. I personally stick to 2 channels stereo. For me it is the only way to listen to music.

I'm rebuilding my theater. Going for 7.x.4, and current video formats - 4k and all that (but no Dolby Vision or HDR). But that's the end. I won't chase upgrades after that. I'll put the effort into making the theater comfortable, sound and look as good as I can within current tech, and be easy to use for the significant other. I'll soon be buying a well vetted processor, even if I give up the last bit of performance. My hope is that it will run for the long run.

Are we strictly discussing home theater and 2 channel, or techology in general?

Unlike my two-channel tendencies, I'm oddly content with 1080p/5.1 for movies and I'm a HUGE movie fan.
I think my modest 5.1 system (Denon AVR + old speakers/sub) sounds really good and my pro calibrated Panasonic VT60 looks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really respect companies like Emo who can remain current and competitive in what I think is a frantic market space. I mean, ponder the relatively glacial pace at which amplifier technology changes when compared to home theater decoding/video/audio calibration.
So, yes, if I were on the continual home theater upgrade path, the rich enjoyment of cinema would erode in my life.

I feel as though if you are happy with a 5.1 1080p system then stick with that. The gains are fairly small going from 5.1 to 7.1 etc.
That being said after going to a true 4K projector and Atmos 7.2.4 I would not go back to anything less than that. The Atmos sound tracks do add a certain depth to movie watching. The 4k projector was a noteable step up from my 1080p (103β screen). Although when I upgraded my 1080p plasma to a 75β 4k Sony I did not think the upgrade in resolution was that noticeable. The 103β screen is a different environment though.

Close you eyes, ignore the equipment and enjoy the music. 5.1 is just fine for the occasional video, or a good football game. 2 channel is timeless.

So.....is it still fun? Bill Hell yes, my 5.1 systems is used for around 4 hours per day, every day, and it gives great enjoyment for every minute of that time. Whether it's cable TV, the 4K blue ray or the ATV4K streaming Netflix, Stan or Prime etc, it's all good. Unfortunately the 2.1 stereo currently only averages around 1 hour listening per week, and that's a situation that is simply not acceptable. Fun for sure, but just not enough of it. Looking forward to the XMC-1 DTS-X/Atmos board upgrade to facilitate 5.1.2 and then that will do for the next few years. Cheers Gary
